Had a discussion with a friend who is a big Ayn Rand fan who proposed the idea that Donald Trump as the archtype Randian hero who is the amalgamation of Howard Roark and Hank Rearden. Like Roark he builds skyscrapers in NY, like Rearden he's a very wealthy businessman. And his popularity has been mostly build on a perceived uncompromising style, like those 2 characters.
Now while I quite appreciate Rand's anti-collectivist views and her contempt for progressives, I cannot call myself a fan due to her aggressive atheism and hence no means to ground her own moral outlook.
But I thought it was interesting take on the whole Trump phenomenon.
I don’t think Ayn Rand would have shared DT’s enthusiasm for single payer health insurance.
Nah. Myers-Briggs archetype perhaps, ENTJ
It’s been a while since I read Atlas Shrugged, but didn’t Hank Rearden start off as a financial contributor to many progressive causes, the price of “playing the game” so to speak?
Or his use of the (state) power of eminent domain to seize private property for his own (private) development purposes.
But sure, other than that, he's a regular Randian hero.
Did he write a check to Wesley Mouch?
I don’t recall it.
His wife seemed to be a big time liberal, though.
Yeah she was the one who pushed for it, but I seem to recall all of the contributions were with his money and he wrote the checks himself. He just didn’t pay much attention to who was getting his money and what they actually did with his money.
Well cheer up Trump is no longer for single payer healthcare. :-)
Well yes of course.
He is currently trying to win the GOP presidential nomination and has adjusted his position accordingly.
Yes Trump is now on the right course and lets just STFU and elect him. :-)
Yes and ignore everything he said and done in the past.
Brilliant idea.
Just STFU and vote for him.
No questions asked.
Seems to me like we tried that once.
You’re going to love Trump. Just go with the flow. :-)
I didn’t go with the flow in 2008.
I’m not doing it now.
Dissent is still permitted in this country.
I hope.
Voting for Trump is dissent. Embrace the dissent. :-)
You mean just lie back and enjoy it. Should I put some ice on it afterwards.
Don’t have the right to vote for someone else if I want?
Like Ted Cruz?
Don’t tell Rand Paul. His circuits will fry..
What if Ted is running on the Trump ticket? Decisions decisions. :-)
I will unconditionally support DT if he becomes the GOP POTUS nominee, despite my personal reservations.
Third parties usually succeed in electing Dems IMHO.
