It's credible to assert that everyone "manipulates" everyone else, babies manipulate their families without needing to think about it because it's how they survive, people of marriagable age "manipulate" each other in an aboveboard manner, it's called "flirting".
The problem is when:
Eventually, other people can begin to figure out what's up, they're not stupid.
But the "manipulative" person has latched onto one certain person. This subject, the "innocent" girl Trilby to the manipulative Svengali, can see what the person is doing with one part of her mind, but another part, what we'll call "Bambi" to "Godzilla", this other part just can't believe the person is doing it.
Finally, Zilla is extremely expert at manipulating the "just can believe it" part of Bambi's mind, the place where "her brain doesn't process it".

Yeah, other than the fact that hypnosis and brainwashing are real. Other than these things being a threat to civilization, it is merely navel gazing. Sure.
