Diversity in the MIT Department of Physics
MIT ^

Posted on 08/04/2015 5:25:17 AM PDT by reaganaut1

The MIT Physics Department is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and student populations to improve our excellence and to better serve the society that supports our work.

Like in many physics departments, white males are over-represented in our student and faculty populations. There are several reasons to pursue change, seeking to increase the number of women and under-represented minorities in our community:

Broadening the talent pool increases the talent. At MIT we constantly strive for excellence in everything we do. Our level of excellence will be improved if we sample from the most inclusive population.

Attracting more students keeps us vital.

The US needs more students trained in science. To walk our talk about education, we must be more inclusive.

A more inclusive atmosphere enhances the quality of life for everyone. Being a physicist is not easy. Improving the climate helps everyone be happier and more productive.

As the US becomes more diverse, we must evolve to remain relevant. White males are a decreasing minority in the US. The MIT mission statement calls us to serve the nation and the world.

According to http://web.mit.edu/facts/enrollment.html, 1217 out of 4512, or 27%, of MIT undergrads are Asian, and 49% are white. So it is Asians that are over-represented, but it is politically correct to talk about the excess of white males. The intellectual dishonesty at MIT disgusts me.

Yeah, right. To talk and do science though, requires thought - reasoning, rational minds, not skin-color. Not sex.

The quota system is alive in all our universities, giving the under-talented an opportunity to crusade for their causes at the expense of true education. This will be the downfall of our universities.

**Broadening the talent pool increases the talent.**

Bovine feces.

As a Course 8 alum (both undergrad and grad), I am disgusted with my alma mater. First they get rid of the registration-day porn, and now this.

And Transparent Horizons is still butt-ugly.

> At MIT we constantly strive for excellence in everything we do.

Yet the announce that excellence is secondary to demographics.

Nothing epitomizes the stupidity of modern-day liberalism than their campaign for "diversity and inclusion" in all areas of life.

Yes, I'm sure pro and college football and basketball coaches have diversity as their paramount objective. That's why you see mostly black halfbacks and defensive backs in the NFL and why so many major college and pro basketball teams have virtually all black players./s

Whatever your endeavor, if you want to succeed, you get the best people available regardless of their skin color or place of origin.

Maybe they could draw potential rocket scientists from Mexico or Zimbabwe?

I have yet to see an empirical study showing that “diversity” results in beneficial outcomes.

There is an opportunity for a lower-tier university to leap-frog into the upper tier here if they have the guts to forego diversitah and affirmative action.

“Our level of excellence will be improved if we sample from the most inclusive population.”

This and most of the other sentences caused big why’s to fly up from my brain.

Even “being a physicist isn’t easy” needs inspection. Once you are a physicist, what makes “being” one harder than, say, “being” a dentist or a classicist?

The federal government is corrupting everything.

I wonder if Asians as well as Hispanics are shocked to find out they aren’t white.

The US needs more students trained in science.

A nugget! The only accurate statement in the article.

If you seek diversity instead of talent you are going to more diversity and less talent. Furthermore you are going to reject highly qualified students who may solve the problem of faster than light travel who decide to become lawyers instead.

The goal of more and better scientists is only achieved by selecting the Best and the Brightest regardless of race or gender. Anything less and you will degrade the quality of your student body. And, that is exactly what we see happening.

You can’t hire an unqualified affirmative action Chemical Engineer. If he doesn’t know what he’s doing, your billion dollar petrochemical plant blows up.

These degrees are hard to get for a reason.

Registration day porn? Unless Alpha Phi was involved it probably wasn’t that interesting.

OK.

I hereby call upon all white, male tenured faculty to resign their posts immediately, so as to make room for a new, all-minority staff.

I'll step over to the side here, lest the stampede of departures bowls me over....

It’s a good thing it’s not important. If it were important like, say, the NFL this wouldn’t come up.

In one to two generations white males ( and white women) will be complete blocked from advancement in almost every field.

We have recently moved to a new city. I was in a local bank headquarters to open a new checking account. Nearly all the employees and managers were Latino. These are the people the bank is grooming to be the next leaders. They will carry their prejudices against whites with them as they climb the corporate ladder. They aren't going to be hiring whites.
