Back in the early part of last century we used to have the same thing.

The milk and egg man, the vegetable cart, the guys who would deliver ice, repair your shoes, sharpen your knives would come to your house. You would place your orders for meat and fish and the butcher and fish monger would deliver.

If you were middle class female you used to have at least a "daily" who would come in and help with getting your chores done. Dad usually had his "driver" who would pick him up and take him to work.

So all that is old is new again.

But now it is only the upper-upper middle class and above who can afford a lot of this.

Good point- I remember the guy who came around to sharpen scissors and such, the egg-lady, etc. That sort of thing was just petering out when I was growing up but you’re right, it’s come around again, only in the old days they were single proprietors, not employees.

I grew up midcentury and we had groceries delivered, bakery deliveries twice a week, soda deliveries, laundry dry cleaning pick up and delivery, daily help, and weekly flowers. Also buyers at the local department stores would choose and deliver in different sizes of clothing each season.
