The Jews relied on the government to protect them and refused to defend themselves. My neighbor when I was growing up fled Austria on skis after seeing the hand writing on the wall. Once the mob mentality kicked in, they had to flee all across a hostile Europe trying to get to the US. Ultimately, the “Cooper’s” made it to the US before the war ended.
