Many of us remember the histrionics on display by GOP members of Congress when they had to take positions and vote on hiking the country’s debt ceiling. Well, according to the following information, provided by someone who sounds very authentic, here is the legerdemain that went on in that closed door session of the uniparty in D.C. There are a number of details here that lead me to think this is a true account. You may certainly make up your own mind. The Congressman’s name and state are deleted to protect his identity.

“That Tuesday, lunch began with our leadership saying, ‘We’re asking every Republican Senator here to affirmatively consent to lower the threshold for Harry Reid to take up the debt ceiling from 60 votes to 50 votes. And we were told every one of you should agree for two reasons.

‘Number 1-If we do this, it will happen and hallelujah, hallelujah, that’s what we want…we want trillions more in debt with no spending reforms, because we’re scared of this issue. We don’t want to have a political fight on this. #2-If we do this, Democrats will have the votes to do it on their own, which means all of us Republicans can vote NO and we can go home and tell our constituents, we opposed the thing we just consented to allow (to) happen.’

Now, I was sitting there-to be honest-I hadn’t gone to lunch to pick a fight, but as I listened to that, I was astonished, and I raised my hand, and I said, ‘There’s no universe in which I can consent to...

I don’t know about anyone else, but this doesn’t surprise me one bit....

This is exactly how business gets done in Washington.

I took a lot of grief right here on FreeRepublic back in 2010 when I said the GOP was fully on board with ObamaCare but fabricated their "opposition" the same way this scenario is described. History has proven me correct, even to the point where we saw that pathetic display of governance in the fall of 2013. If you remember, that was the case where Ted Cruz made his vain attempt to defund ObamaCare ... and his most vocal critics were REPUBLICANS.

I don’t believe this for a minute because of one sentence.
A quote from the self serving unnamed Congress critter whom we presume to be a Senator from some unnamed state.

I said, ‘There’s no universe in which I can consent to doing that. I spent two years campaigning across (state deleted) and telling (delete) if you elect me, ‘I’ll fight with every breath in my body to stop the out of control spending and debt that we are bankrupting our kids and grandkids.’”

Does anyone with the brains God gave a half witted billy goat believe any sitting senator has the integrity to say that to the holy Leadership?

I thought the slight of hand was that they just don’t count it anymore. Just checked the Treasury web site and the debt hasn’t changed foe awhile.

This ‘news’ item is in Ted Cruz’ book, if I remember correctly. If not, I think that he has been quoted as saying it.

I think that Cruz has found out that IF he’s going to get anywhere in the election he had best start following Trump....

I do admit that Cruz has supported some good causes and I like him for those and also for standing with Rand Paul on the Senate Floor....

I wouldn’t mind seeing a Cruz/Trump or Trump/Cruz ticket.....

I've always just assumed that a U.S. Senate candidate who campaigns on cutting Federal spending is the one who loses the election ... such is the state of this once-great nation today.

This account was in Ted Cruzs' new book, and the quote you question was made by him. This was semi-widely reported in the run up to his book release. I remember reading it here on FR, but I don't have the cite.

” provided by someone who sounds very authentic,”

The satire alarm bells started clanging the moment I read that.
