Over at the blog Legal Insurrection, law professor William Jacobson reminds us of this answer Elena Kagan gave to Senator John Cornyn in her confirmation hearings to be Solicitor General in 2009:

My Opinion: Once again, lied to by a progressive. It is a mystery to me why so many people still believe what they say. Progressivism is a culture based on lies and it has been proven time and again that the left believe completely and absolutely that the ends justifies the means. The leftist thought process is far more simple and direct than that of rational, thinking people. That is, the left deem something to be true. It's called sociopathy. Leftists are sociopaths. That's why conservatives get nowhere with them - they have no conscience to appeal to, and their logic is based solely on affirming whatever supports their agenda.
Liberals are simply people too morally and intellectually weak to resist Leftists. Weirdly, by being instructed by Leftists, liberals imitate sociopathy without being actual sociopaths. So they become sociopath codependents, grotesque enforcers of sociopathy seeking to please their sociopathic masters by crushing their own souls, and the souls of their children and families and co-workers.
As a result, liberals don't become sociopaths - they go insane, and need antidepressants and booze and totally structured, rigid lives, afraid of making even the smallest decision without direction and approval from authority. As a result, they crave totalitarianism because it actually provides them with the feeling of freedom. And from that, they vote against the Constitution and seek to kill America.
They can not force acceptance of fudge packing.
