It was really a war of Independence, just like the USA revolutionary war or the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. The CSA set up its own President, congress, branches of government, printed its own money, claimed independence and broke away."

I never thought of it that way before, but you make a pretty good point. However, some would consider secession to be a form of treason.

Treason is betrayal, actively working against someone you promised to support. Secession is simply walking away, like a polite divorce. There’s a huge difference, all spin aside.
