That was sound advice.

Cash on hand is important. If the electronics stop for any reason, our world comes to a standstill.

Sort of like the ant and the grasshopper.

It pays to be prepared.

The big issue will be if the paper money in your safe goes to nothing in value because they want to put out a new currency devaluing what you have to 5 to 1 or 10 to 1...(5 of the old notes to 1 of their new notes). For get about metals..at least officially...metals may need to become the underground currency that you don’t dare let the authorities catch you with!

Since the laws consider any cash over $10k to be unnecessary and evidence of possible criminal activity, cash is confiscated every day in this country for that reason alone. And repeatedly these seizures have been upheld in court.

I have read nothing that indicates possession of these amounts of cash in one’s home is exempt from this legal presumption of guilt.

I’ll concede that if you are discrete the likelihood of the authorities finding out is slim. Nonetheless, possession is possession be it in your home or your car, or your suitcase. All it will take is an A Hole neighbor with a grudge making a call to the police claiming you deal drugs and store the cash proceeds in your home. When they bust in & find no drugs they will seize the cash as evidence of (undefined) illicit activities.

http://www.policestateusa.com/

has plenty of examples if you are willing to wade through endless articles of government “brutality”.

Or just do some searches for articles on cash asset seizures. Loads of them out there. Incredible sums of money being taken every year for that reason alone.

Ray, the amount of government bonds in the Eurobanks for the four southern tier countries is still substantial.

The system is not as resilient or foolproof as we might think.

Also, the Euros are in their own version of QE, which makes their system very vulnerable. Even German bonds are yielding negative interest rates—not a healthy indicator at all.

There are businessmen in the ‘hood who are good with cash, so give them your wallet for safekeeping.

I have a mutual fund that I add to every month, and I do have ‘little’ cash at home for emergencies, other than that I don't have what most people have laying around....

I’d like to add this:

Keep the cash in bills no larger than $20. You could find yourself paying $50 for something that you could have gotten for $20

Having been through a number of hurricanes and ice storms my suggestion is, if possible, keep in cash sufficient funds to cover 2 week’s living expenses.

I read an interesting piece some time ago which said the longer we go without a “disaster” the more people come to assume that the likelihood of disaster is less. When, in fact, it becomes greater.

After a while, the small things going wrong without [apparently] resulting in a major problem come to be seen as “normal” and thus ignored. In reality, they eventually pile up and boom. The boom coming as a complete surprise.

My friend hid money inside poured concrete. It just looks like a rough cube and is in his backyard in a pile of bricks that has weeds and stuff on it.

He says you can either hit it with a hammer or just drop it on the patio to break it. It was supposed to be smaller, and look like a doorstop but ended up a little larger than planned.

Makes me wonder: could you do that with a gun? Would the chemical process of the drying concrete eat through the plastic and harm the gun (or money)?

I assume if you put the gun in a well sealed container and poured the concrete around that it would be fine. I’d throw a few desiccant packets in for good measure.

For over 6 years the banks have been paying very little interest, but lending it out at good returns.
