Lerner was chairman of the Berkeley chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society from 1966-1968. In December 1971 he founded a splinter faction called New American Movement, which like SDS and other splinter groups was Marxist.
The New American Movement was headquartered in Chicago.

...the main emphasis will be on learning how to... live and work collectively...Which, like "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" sounds fair until you try to put it in practice and find out that some faceless bureaucrat gets to decide what you "need" and what you owe!
