The Ministry of Defence employs staff across the region in a variety of roles from front line troops to support staff and civil servants

Thousands of North East jobs could be at risk after military chiefs were reportedly told to find an extra £1bn in savings.

The Ministry of Defence employs staff across the region in a variety of roles from front line troops to support staff and civil servants.

It is the home of key bases like RAF Boulmer in Northumberland and Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire where MoD employees pour millions each year into the local economy.

The cuts will be finalised in the forthcoming defence strategic review which a number of experts have said could see the Government fail to meet its NATO commitment of spending 2% of the country’s GDP - its earnings - on defence.

However an MoD spokeswoman said the Government expected to meet the NATO spending target.

She said: “We are confident that we will spend 2% of GDP on defence in this financial year. The prime minister has also made clear that there will be an annual 1% real-terms increase in spending on defence equipment throughout this parliament.”
