Cali Bike Shop Bans Men from Store Certain Nights, Claims Males are "Intimidating"

Feeling that bicycle maintenance is too male-centric, Bike Forth, a community bike shop in California, will open its doors every other Tuesday specifically to cater to the “Women Trans Femme” (WTF) communities. Every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, everyone is welcome, but men are not allowed to shop on these Tuesdays.

Volunteers at the shop noticed that “most” of their customers were men, so they felt that they should be banned occasionally so that “other” communities would feel welcome and not intimidated.

Anne Hereford, a volunteer at Bike Forth who helped initiate Women Trans Femme Night, said, “The idea is for people who might feel uncomfortable coming to the shop in general to have a safe space to come and learn about bikes. At the shop it’s a very supportive community, but some people still feel intimidated about coming to work on their bikes, specifically women and people who identify as women.”

She continued, “We want to empower them to work on their bikes, and if that means having a special night where they can come and not feel intimidated then that’s what we want to offer.”

...The store claims that they are not actually banning men, but simply uninviting them from being allowed inside. “We don’t exactly turn people away — we say, ‘Do you identify as part of this community?’” Hereford explained. “If you don’t feel you’re a member of the Women Trans Femme community, this is not a space that you’re invited to. So it’s more of a self-selection.”

More power to them. I am not forced to visit and as long as my tax dollars are not supporting it I don’t really care.

Were I a customer, I would dis-invite myself on every day - and tell them why.

Could not have a more apt acronym.

Wow! The socialists are out and proud and in full force! They know no bounds.

A random guy isn’t allowed in the bike shop on certain days but a bakery has to bake a giant dildo cake if, not asked, but told to. I hope a gay, black muslim guy walks in there. See what happens.

From the article, “.. the store isn’t banning them, they are uninviting them from being allowed in the store”. ROTFLMAO! Talk about new speak! New break-up quote: “I’m not dumping you, I am simply uninviting you from being in any sort of relationship with me”. Boss firing employee: “I’m not firing you, I am simply uninviting you from being part of the work force here”.

I think that “WTF” is a very appropriate acronym in this situation.

Every man should honor their request and not visit the store on selected days, nor any other days.

They absolutely have the right to do this.

Just as male customers have the right to find another bike shop and let them know the reason.

I find it truly offensive when a company decides to exclude me because someone else might be offended/intimidated/whatever. If it is the company’s own view, then the exclusion would be full time and I would not be a customer. But when they are advocating another’s view, yet still wanting me to spend my money there at other times (when they don’t care about the offense/intimidation/whatever), I get offended because they are simply being insulting.

This is not exclusion on behavior - it is exclusion on being.

They have the right, just as those like me have the right to react civilly.

This definitely doesn’t sound/look like the standard bike store

This bike shop is run by the Davis Bike Collective (no kidding), so real life isn’t in their collective consciousness. My question is this: After getting their bikes, how in the world with the people who feel intimidated by the mere presence of men ever be able to ride their bikes in public? Unless Davis, California plans to ban men, as well.
