The Democrats were trying to change the Natural Born Citizen requirement for a much more basic ideological reason. They don’t believe that the United States is special and unique. The Natural Born Citizen suggest that being born an American imparts a special quality on a person.
The Progressives believe that all people are the same. All cultures are equal. All people have same motives. All people have the same faults. No one is better than anyone else.
Therefore anyone should be eligible to be president of the United States.
The same ideological reasoning applies to immigration. All people are the same so anyone should be able to come to the US and be a citizen.

If you can't re-write the Constitution, then rewrite the dictionary.
Re-defining Natural Born Citizen from being the most pure form of citizenship to the most diluted form possible is one of many examples of this strategy and how well it works on a dumbed down, uninterested population.
