FORT HUACHUCA — Beginning Monday, the lower Garden Canyon Picnic Area will be closed to the public so it can be used as a staging area for heavy construction equipment needed to repair Garden Canyon Road, according to a press release from the Post Public Affairs Office.

The road in Garden Canyon is in extremely poor shape after last year’s flood. It is hazardous in its current condition and the danger level will increase as heavy construction equipment moves in Monday to begin repairs, the release stated.

For safety reasons, public access to Garden Canyon Road will now be further restricted just past the Site Papa access road and everyone is to avoid the area during the construction period, the public affairs office noted.

Military police patrol the area regularly and violators — vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, horseback riders and others — will be cited with federal trespassing, the press release stated.

Once the canyon becomes safe again for recreational use it will be open to the public, but that date is unknown at this time.

Is this the same canyon that provides water supply to Sierra Vista that the EPA said couldn’t be touched except by pick, shovel and wheel barrows?
