Of Course Ted Cruz Could Win
by KEVIN D. WILLIAMSON March 24, 2015
Columnists and their headline writers have a habit of offering hostages to Fate e.g., Lets not even pretend Ted Cruz has a chance of becoming president, Lets be serious about Ted Cruz from the start: Hes too extreme and too disliked to win, Opposition from Republicans who care about winning in 2016 will doom the chances of a senator whose tactics . . . have established him as a loudmouth loser. We have heard this sort of thing before. Reagan cant win, Ford says. Thats the 1976 version.
The 1980 New York Times version, with the nearly identical headline: Ford Declares Reagan Cant Win. Ford was really quite sure of himself: Every place I go, and everything I hear, there is a growing, growing sentiment that Governor Reagan cannot win the election. New York magazine: The reason Reagan cant win. . . . Preposterous, sociologist Robert Coles wrote about the idea of a Reagan victory. The founder of this magazine worried that Reagan simply could not win in 1980, and several National Review luminaries quietly hoped that George H. W. Bush would be the nominee.
There were serious, thoughtful conservatives who thought in 1980 that their best hope was to have Daniel Patrick Moynihan run as a Democrat that year, while many others were looking to ex-Democrat John Connally to carry the conservative banner on the GOP side.

Precisely.
I stand with Ted.
When they’re comparing you to then former Governor Reagan circa 1980, you’re winning.
Let me ask all of you— Do you vote for someone like you bet on a race horse? This is not “who do you think wins”. This is who do I think is MY BEST CANDIDATE. I get good friends telling me to vote for some fat faced dynasty baby because “HE CAN WIN” Well who the hell cares. I want only someone that agrees with my AMERICAN views or I will stay home again!!. WAKE THE HELL UP REPUBLICANS.!!!
The Left is certainly frightened.
“The great irony of the moment is that the people writing Cruz off this week are sneering at his lack of political sophistication and congratulating themselves on their own. Ask Senator David Dewhurst how well that worked out for him.”
Amen.
Who were the NR luminaries who thought Reagan could not win. I know George Will supported Baker, perhaps that is who they mean?
One aspect that we rarely talk about is a 3rd Party run that splits our vote. If Jeb is chosen, then it is almost assured - along with the Democrat winning. If Cruz is the nominee, then there is NO WAY that a 3rd Party candidate will get to his right - the only place for them is in the middle, and in the middle. So the 3rd Party guy winds up being Jeb or someone. Well no one cares about Jeb and he’s likely to get a lot of Democrat votes.
With Cruz in, the conservatives FINALLY have someone they can vote for in November (rather than have to vote for)...the first time in 32 years.
He’s the first Presidential candidate since then I could actually get excited about. I voted for Bushes because I had to and Dole and Romney, couldn’t stomach McCain, voted for Barr.
I’m trying a new tagline
I guarantee you right now if the RNC manages to engineer Jebster being crowned next March as the GOP nominee like Romney and McCain before him, he will lose. He will lose by more than either of them.
“the first Presidential candidate since then I could actually get excited about.”
That’s good because he’ll need some Virginia volunteers to collect signatures, etc. We have tough qualification requirements- and a Virginia primary win is a necessity if he’s to succeed.
This will be the first campaign I’ve been active in since George McGovern’s (yes, I once had the extreme pleasure of being young and stupid with high self-esteem LOL!).
You should set your locale to Virginia BTW. There’s only a few messages a month and they’re usually of interest. It does get busy at election time.
Bravo!! Well said!
I dont know how Richard Nixon could have won. I dont know anybody who voted for him.
- The late film critic Pauline Kaels reaction to Richard Nixons landslide victory over George McGovern.
done
Get a Green to run. It would be great to see Hillary! run along with a Billionaire Green and our candidate. Let’s split the Dem vote. You could even put CA, NY and Ill-Annoy into play.
We need the Dems to nominate Fauxcahontas.
Only one way to find out - support him with cash and volunteer work and see how it all comes out. If he ends up being unelectable, it will probably be because too many folks pay him lip service and not enough actually do anything to help propel him along the way.
Bad news for Rep Peter King.
