Union: Why beer and alcohol should not be sold in Ontario grocery stores
During the last few years, almost forever, both Liberal and Progressive Conservative governments have floated the idea of allowing beer and/or alcohol to be sold in places other than government-run stores manned by union workers. The idea never went anywhere.
Ontarians who favour the end to the government monopoly, were hopeful during the late 1990s when Mike Harris was premier and the late Jim Flaherty was Ontarios finance minister. In a rare act of true conservatism in Canada, Flaherty opined that if something can be advertised in the Yellow Pages, the government should not be doing it. But, as under other Ontario governments, nothing came of it.
Last week Premier Kathleen Wynne announced her government would allow the sale of beer and alcohol in selected supermarkets throughout the province. Unlike other occasions, Wynne appears to be serious about bringing in legislation to allow this where other governments have failed to act. And no one who follows Ontario politics has any doubts about why Ontarians are somehow now grownup enough to buy a six-pack in a store that is not under the control of Premier Mom.

Even in the USA, relatively few states nowadays sell liquor through state-owned liquor stores. To have the Province of Ontario still do this just puzzles me.
Pennsylvania still does exclusively, and Alabama has state-run stores in competition with private business.
All hail the LLBO beer store! Yeah the purchase of alcohol in Ontario is positively archaic. And the stores hours are more befitting a bank than a liquor store. Good beer, though.

Same with Mississippi! State run stores for Hard booze and wines.
That’s why I said few states have state-owned liquor stores anymore. The states may own the distribution network, but the actual retail outlet is now mostly in private hands in the USA.
It’s for your own good!!! Think of the chidruns.
It’s probably for the best. Just think of the mess that would ensue after someone plunked down a case of Molson on a bag of milk in the grocery cart.
Here int he people's Republic of Maryland, at least in Montgomery County, the county has a monopoly on hard liquor. Beer and wine can be sold in specialty stores, and each grocery store chain can designate one location in the county it can sell beer or wine at.
Typical over-regualtion.
Actually, what I am thinking of is the state having complete control over the entire liquor sales and distribution process—in short, you can only buy alcoholic beverages at a state-owned liquor store. I believe Pennsylvania and Utah do this, but what you described is not what I call a true state monopoly on liquor sales.
That is unique to Monkey county then.
Howard, Frederick and Carroll counties (maybe others) can all have their liquor stores open on Sundays now, selling everything, hard liquor included.
Virginia and North Carolina only sell liquor in state stores, wine and beer anywhere
