OfficeMax call center in Peru reportedly closing (Town in Illinois)

An OfficeMax call center in Peru is closing its doors, beginning layoffs in March, according to two sources.

Layoffs should be completed in November.

A news story in 2013 indicated 275 people worked at the Peru facility. Employees on Thursday were instructed not to speak to the media about the layoffs.

OfficeMax merged with Office Depot in 2013.

As previously reported, the combined company disappointed state lawmakers by locating its headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla. (Office Depot’s longtime home) and pulling out of Naperville, where OfficeMax had been headquartered.

OfficeMax workers have dealt with uncertainty about their jobs for the past year or more.

During part of 2014, some employees at the Peru facility were flown to India to train workers there, the NewsTribune learned. Intermittently, other workers from the call center would be selected to train people in India.

The NewsTribune talked with employees in 2014 who believed they were not allowed to talk about the experience overseas.

OfficeMax is an American office supplies retailer founded in 1988. It is a subsidiary of Office Depot.

In 2003 OfficeMax was acquired for $1.3 billion by Boise Cascade Office Products Corp., which later rebranded itself as OfficeMax.

On Feb. 4, 2015, Office Depot agreed to be acquired by rival Staples.

Going to India to train them to take American jobs. This should result in boycott. Speaking for myself, I’ll shop elsewhere.

Gee. Tax-you-out-the-ass freeze-your-ass Illinois or balmy, no-state-income-tax Florida. Where would you rather base your call center? File this under “no brainer”.

GROSSLY overpriced office supplies. Far better to shop Sam’s Warehouse and ebay/amazon for office supplies in the first place.

The corporate HQ moved to balmy Florida. The call center is being moved to even balmier India.

Something similar happened to my son.
He worked for one of the leading cell providers, 28 yrs worth. Worked their commercial division.
The company had the chutzpah to want him to train his replacement, in India.
He was laid off about a year later. After 28 yrs service!

This in my opinion is a subject in which both parties are equally at fault.

The democrats are all for exporting American jobs. But the Republicans are all for exporting American jobs.

Everyone is exporting American jobs. GOP bring them back.

Now. I’m completely series.

Bring jobs back to America.
