Job seekers and Michigan employers can connect with each other through a state-sponsored virtual career fair on Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pure Michigan Talent Connect’sMiVirtualCareerFairs bring together Michigan employers and talent from across the state and the globe in an online, virtual environment.
Since 2012 more than 189 employers and 27,063 job seekers have been connected through the state’s fourteen sponsored events. With assistance from the Michigan Works! System and event partner Capital Area Michigan Works!, 345 jobs with 50 Michigan employers in varying industries will be featured in the February event, making it the largest to date.
“This is a great opportunity for employers hiring from across the state to use an online high-tech approach to connect with job seekers,” said Amy Cell, senior vice president for talent enhancement at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “MiVirtualCareerFairs are an easy, accessible way to promote your company, and engage and network with a vast amount of talent seeking to live, work and play in Michigan.”
There’s no cost for job seekers to participate. Registration information can be found at www.mitalent.org/virtualcareerfair. During virtual events, job seekers can explore customized employer booths, interact one-on-one with participating employers and search and apply for job opportunities. In addition, job seekers can access information about career development programs and resources in the event Media Center and Resource Lounge. Veterans can connect with staff at the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) booth to learn about veteran’s benefits in Michigan. The Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) will be participating as a resource to assist job seekers interested in finding opportunities in the nonprofit sector.....

I suppose a virtual career fair is where virtual candidates can apply for virtual jobs and maybe even get paid virtual salaries and virtual commissions if they become virtual hires.
Tech is the real growth sector in Michigan right now and online really makes sense for initial contact between employers and potential employees.
When Dan Gilbert advertized 1200 job openings in Detroit a year or so back, 25,000 applicants showed up. Things like this really help to weed out the field without wasting a lot of time on face to face contact with people who won’t be hired.
My experience, both as an employer and as a job seeker, is that the vast majority of them are dog and pony shows where employers are arm-twisted to show up as a public service to give candidates the impression that lots of companies are hiring when they aren't. Your chances of actually getting a job from one of these shows are about as good as mass e-mailing a resume which are screened by a computer for inclusion or deletion according to certain catch phrases in the resume.
And the employer representatives unlucky enough to man the booths make very poor computers.
Yeah I know what you mean about dog and pony shows. Its much better when a couple of companies get together to do it on their own because they’re actually hiring.
The company I work for has an R&D facility in Farmington Hills, MI. Currently about a dozen openings for Engineers, Sales, and Program Managers.
I have no idea how things are done in Pennsylvania, but I have coordinated and run job fairs in Iowa and Texas, and we charged the employers pretty hefty fees for a booth and had GREAT successes at all of them. And most of the jobs were in high tech, sales, call centers, gaming, insurance and finance. Far fewer were in labor, food service, security and the like. If I had to guess, the average wage was about $15 an hour, and that was 10 to 20 years ago. YMMV.
Tech is big and growing in Detroit and all around southern Michigan these days. Its good but Rick Snyder has been so fixated on attracting tech jobs that he’s ignored manufacturing.
