Jeb Bush’s “shocking” Position On Illegal Immigration

Jeb Bush supports amnesty for illegal immigrants. According to CNN this comes as a shock to conservatives. Which conservatives are shocked by Bush’s desire to provide amnesty to illegals isn’t exactly clear. Is anyone surprised that Jeb Bush supports giving the children of illegals citizenship? Surely no one is surprised that Bush doesn’t believe we can control the border. Admittedly it’s a little odd that he wants to repopulate Detroit with illegals. It’s telling that not even illegals will move to Detroit, despite the abundance of abandoned free housing. CNN obviously wants to create a sensational story by alleging that conservatives are shocked by Bush’s remarks. Really though, is there anyone out there shocked?

Jeb Bush has long supported amnesty for illegals. He’s been clamoring for it since his brother was President, if not before. Obviously one campaign or another leaked this to the media. Either one of the progressive candidates is trying to hurt Bush in order to get into the race (Christie) or perhaps the Bush campaign is leaking it themselves in order to get ahead of the story and make it “old news” by the time debates happen later this year. Odds are it isn’t a conservative candidate leaking this information. None of them have anything to gain at this point. They aren’t competing for the same campaign donors and there’s no point, from their perspective, in putting this news out a year before the first ballots are cast.

Jeb Bush is actually right about at least one thing. We’ll never be able to fully secure the border between the United States and Mexico. Once acknowledging this fact, Bush throws his hands up in the air and gives up. However there’s a massive difference between not being able to fully secure a border and not trying to secure it at all. The pro-amnesty crowd really doesn’t want to bother securing the border. The Democrats view illegals as a potential voting block, liberal Republicans view them as cheap labor. Thus securing the border isn’t in their best interests. Even if the government provides amnesty and citizenship to illegals already here, there will be a new crop of them streaming over the border to become part of the next mass amnesty. The left is all in favor of this, thus securing the border in any way would hurt their political ambitions.

In all seriousness though, is anyone shocked by Jeb Bush’s statements? It’s almost as shocking as Mitt Romney’s support for fascist healthcare via Romneycare. Next thing you know CNN will be telling is Chris Christie supports big government and likes doughnuts. Maybe they could twist things up with a headline like “moderates shocked: Ted Cruz is pro-life!” Conservative Republicans already recognize that Jeb Bush is a liberal. He would be a complete disaster if he won the nomination. No one has a better chance to lose to Hillary Clinton than Jeb Bush. The country has Bush fatigue, the Republican Party has Bush fatigue. The GOP hasn’t won the White House without a Bush on the ticket since 1972. In fact, the GOP hasn’t won the White House without Nixon or a Bush on the ticket since 1928. It’s time for this streak to end.

Jeb Bush is going to be a difficult candidate to beat but he is beatable. He’ll have all of the money but he has major problems. Bush is very open about his liberal policies, he doesn’t mask them with conservative rhetoric like Romney and McCain did. If conservatives would get behind one candidate rather than split votes between 5-7 candidates, Bush would go down easily. In many ways it’s up to conservatives to decide whether Bush gets the nomination or not. If we quibble amongst ourselves like we did in 2008 and 2012, declaring everyone but our candidate a conservative heretic who we’ll never support even though we agree with them 98% of the time, Bush will win. It would be nice if some of the conservative candidates out there would back out of running for the good of the GOP and the country. It would be nice if Rand Paul, for example, decided to stay in the Senate rather than run for President. The right can defeat Bush but not if our votes are split. Bush’s comments on illegal immigration weren’t shocking but they were a reminder of why he should not win the GOP nomination.

Let’s not be completely ridiculous. Even the most sealed borders have holes in them. People still got over the Berlin Wall after all. While a border wall will never be fully secure, it can still be largely secure and thus allow very few to enter illegally.

The only thing shocking is CNN runs with this non-story thinking it’ll be believed.
