A word of hope in our dark hour from a voice that does not ofter speak of hope. Yet we know it is true that America will survive because a remnant of who we are remains and will not stand down. This will be a year of greatness and a year of trial. We will struggle through the trial and our hearts will burn for the greatness.

Bump for some great stuff. That was a time of an intense wave of progressive passion as well: as Greenfield points out, the Prohibition movement and the Income tax were about to hit. Wilson, though, I think that it would have been very difficult to tell Wilson's course of action from what he presented to the public at the time. He was, recall, to be elected on the basis of keeping America out of a war he was about to plunge it into.

In Wilson was that internationalist fervor that posited collective security in the place of the entanglements of the Great Powers, the sole virtue of that idea being that unlike the others it hadn't failed yet. It has now. And yet it hangs on, and so do the other noxious tendencies of that social climate: Prohibition has moved to target first drugs (unsuccessfully) and now guns (still more unsuccessfully), the income tax has bloated from the original promised maximum of 10% to anything the progressives want, suffrage has moved from women to people who aren't even from this country; in short, the progressives, always on the cutting edge of social change, haven't changed themselves at all. It is as if the muck they've made of the past never happened, or if it did it was somebody else's fault. They haven't changed at all.
