I vowed to banish from my life the weakness of taking for granted the countless blessings a loving, heavenly Father bestows upon me every day. I vowed to express my love for Him with what matters most: a thankful heart
Work had been demanding. I needed the upcoming Thanksgiving break; I needed to sleep late; I needed to enjoy good food; I needed to be with family.
But then, what I saw in a hospital parking lot made me realize what I needed most of all: a thankful heart.
I watched a family loading a small boy into a van. Imprisoned for life in a wheelchair, his legs had atrophied to little more than pants with nothing in them, his arms flailed, his head weaved from side to side, saliva dripped from his mouth, and his eyes were fixed in a hopeless, upward stare. You know, my wife and I live in a smaller, run down trailer that has some issues...our only vehicle is about to take it’s last ride...we have aches and pains and always seem to be tired, and the way we look at it, life is wonderful! We have a roof over our heads. We have jobs enough to pay the bills and put food on the table. When it snows, we usually get to snuggle up together and watch a movie, and we have 2 sweet kittehs that keep us occupied and laughing, even when times get tight. Thank you, Lord, for a beautiful, exciting, amazing and wonderful life!
God Bless that family!!
1. I awoke, this morning.
2. I could see, whether it be the light of the complex security lights, or dawning daylight.
3. I arose from my bed, with the accompanying functions intact, that come with rising from sleep.
4. I could turn on the lights.
5. I could make my own morning drink.
6. I could open my own front door, and look out upon the local scenery, feel the bite of a cold November morning, feel the wind across my face, and see the dawn light before the sun broke over the top of the next building.
There are many my age, who cannot, and we are all military veterans.
To be alive, is being thankful enough, for me. The rest is ‘the gravy’.
