UCLA's 'Optimist' tribute to avowed communist Angela Davis blasted

A UCLA campaign to honor role model alumni for their idealism is drawing fire after picking avowed communist Angela Davis as one of its inspirational figures.

The school-sponsored "We, the Optimists" campaign includes a banner showing a young Davis, with the words "We Question" under the image. While Davis' effort to rehabilitate her reputation has been successful in academia, some students object to her inclusion on Bruin Walk.

“Her selection as a UCLA optimist is not inspiring, it is unbalanced and perhaps politically motivated,” Jacob Kohlhepp, a student at UCLA and member of the Bruin Republicans, wrote in a recent opinion piece for the widely-read higher education blog The College Fix. “What’s more, the "Optimists" campaign has many powerful stories in its narrative: helping the homeless, innovating in medicine, exploring the next frontier – all of which make me feel proud to be a Bruin. Professor Davis’s actions are not in this category of inspiration.”

At trial, she was acquitted and she later ran for vice president of the U.S. on the Communist Party ticket. She also served as a professor at University of California-Santa Cruz's History of Consciousness Department and chaired the school's Feminist Studies Department before retiring.

I thought communists never retired.

Bill Ayers was going to receive an award at retirement until a cop that lost his hand tossing away a weatherman bomb paid the committee a visit. Maybe the families of other victims made their thoughts known, too.

Now that the DemocRATS have made communism “wildly popular” in this country, I can see why there still are people who worship this ditz.

I really think schools of higher education shouldn’t offer majors unless there is some hope of getting a job using your skillset when you graduate.

UCLA is very pro-communist. She is just part of the fraternity of fellow Marxists.

Hey, maybe this "Optimist" group has the right idea. According to the FBI agents who were familiar with Davis, she did have sexy legs. When they dedicate the banner to her they can play the ZZ top classc, Legs

The Czechs will never forget her. The Soviet Union sponsored a publicity tour of the Warsaw Pact and Soviet Union, in which they puffed her up for months with their propaganda organs.

So when she visited Czechoslovakia, she was approached by the wives of dissidents who had been imprisoned and tortured, and they asked her to intercede on behalf of the political prisoners.

She was deeply offended, and loudly complained that there are no political prisoners in the East, and if their husbands and fathers were in prison, it was because they were criminals who should feel the full force of the law.

Even the authoritarian Czech government was embarrassed by her outburst, at least enough to not arrest the women.

And I thought California had a law against Communists and seditionists teaching in California schools (something recently repealed by pinko Democrats).

California Dems Introduce Bill To Allow Communist Indoctrination in Public Schools (Little Green Footballs ^ | 3-06-08 | Charles Johnson)

...This bill would delete provisions that a permanent or classified school employee, or a classified community college employee may be dismissed from employment if he or she is a knowing member of the Communist Party....

This bill would delete provisions that prohibit a teacher giving instruction in a school or on property belonging to an agency included in the public school system from teaching communism with the intent to indoctrinate or to inculcate in the mind of any pupil a preference for communism. The bill would also delete provisions that a teacher may be dismissed from employment if he or she teaches communism in that way.

(4) Under existing law, a public employee is required to answer, under oath, specified questions, including, but not limited to, knowing membership in an organization advocating the forceful or violent overthrow of the government of the United States or of any state. This bill would delete these provisions. The bill would also dele>e related findings and declarations by the Legislature regarding communism and the Communist Party.
