I've been trying for years to make sure that Americans understand that no business are taxed. NONE! All the price of the service or merchandise included the tax which means that the consumer pays all taxes. Every damn tax including income tax.
Hmmmm ..?? All companies pay a “corporate” tax.
The fact that it gets shoved off to the consumer is a major problem .. but it’s how they do business. Why pay the tax if you can convince the consumer to pay it for you, by inflating the prices of the items they sell.
Preach it, every damn time.
While this is often the case, there are a few very strong exceptions, monopolies (and a subspecies called a franchise - no not the opportunity to buy into a chain) and a category of things called economic rents. In either case, when inelastic supply meets inelastic demand the market price often results in windfall profits. Even the most conservative of economists, has viewed these sorts of things as fair game for taxation. In these cases the taxes come out of the windfall profit and do not generally result in raising the cost of the good sold - which is established by a market mechanism independent of the cost of production.
