Democratic Party Dégringolade and Denial

Election night 2014 found Republicans celebrating deep into the night, with Democrats understandably in more dour spirits, with liberals in Manhattan drowning their spirits in Cosmopolitans, beers in Boston's Beantown and defeated lefties in Colorado passing 'pon the left hand side to ease the pain. What was unexpected, however, was the response from the left-wing in the two days since. For a Democratic Party in the depths of political dégringolade (a rapid decline or deterioration in strength), liberal-Progressives throughout DC and the media are expressing a level of bravado that reeks of either an embarrassing  feign or a deep level of denial of the message sent to them by the American people.

History will document that in the 2014 midterm elections, the Republican Party rode a wave of American disenchantment with President Obama's goals of "fundamentally transforming America" to capture the US Senate with a net gain of seven (possibly 9 depending on Alaska & Louisiana) seats, increased their edge in the House and Governors Mansions, and with gains in state legislatures across the nation threatened to relegate the Democratic Party to the minority potentially for decades. For liberals however, Tuesday was a fluke that time, demographics, the 2016 map and Hillary-fever will easily solve.

This state of denial is music to this conservatives ears, as it shows quite clearly that the left learned nothing from the beat-down we delivered to Democrats not only in states that voted for Romney in 2012, but purple states like Colorado as well as bluer than blue Massachusetts, Illinois and Maryland. Rather than take a sober assessment of the state of their party and its message to the American people, it appears Democrats will continue to drift further left in policy and retain the same stale message, with he same very stale set of party leaders to deliver it.

While convention wisdom would suggest that after suffering such humiliating defeats from coast to coast, the Democratic Party would purge itself of its congressional set of "superstars," early indications suggest that the they will stick to their guns and once again reward losers with the reigns of power for a party the nation increasingly views as old, lacking in cohesiveness and delivering a message of division and lowered expectations for the men and women of America.

Despite grumblings from some within Democratic Party circles, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has vowed to retain her post, and given her fund-raising prowess and void of likely successor she is likely to make good on that promise. The 74 year-old lawmaker, despite having lost three consecutive congressional races to the GOP, hinted at a hope that comprehensive amnesty would be the key to recapturing the House majority for her party, in a defiant letter to colleagues announcing her intentions to retain her leadership role. "Only by changing our political environment and broadening the universe of the electorate," she wrote, "can we build a strong sense of community and an economy that works for everyone."

She was joined by 75 year-old Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) who likewise pledged to retain his role of power. In addition to his ineffective efforts to help Democrats stem the congressional Republican tide of 2014, he carries the additional baggage of being the national face of a Maryland Democratic Party that saw itself humiliated in one the evenings biggest upsets, as Republican Larry Hogan defied all expectations by trouncing highly favored Democrat Anthony Brown to win that states Governors race. That Hogan was not only able to beat Brown, considered a rising national star for Democrats, but with a comfortable five point margin in a deeply Democratic state had pundits and political experts on both sides confounded. Like Pelosi, it appears Hoyer will face little resistance from congressional Democrats in keeping his position, despite three failed attempts to prevent a GOP House majority.

democratic party Despite suffering historic losses in this week's midterm elections, Democratic Party leaders and liberals talking heads find comfort in denying reality.

Time will tell if soon-to-be Senate Minority Leader, Senate Minority Leader (no, that wasn't a typo, I just simply love the sound of that) Harry Reid will face a challenge from within his ranks, but as with the House leadership, it appears he too will hold onto power, despite being the face of Democratic Party futility and for running a national campaign void of focus or issues that resonated with the American public.

If there was a central message that the American people sent to the Democratic Party it is that, while we do desire change from time to time, we are very leery of any politician or party which seeks to "fundamentally transform" the nation we all love so dearly. While we recognize that it is far from perfect, it is still a land that we are confident can provide a pathway to the hopes and dreams of those willing to work hard for them. Once again, however, Democrats chose to run on a platform that played off of our fears and divisions, and seemed to set a lower bar for the future, as evidenced by its insistence on making minimum wage hikes a primary focus of its national agenda.

I would also that if Democrats are scratching their heads and wondering why black voters did not rush to the polls with the same passion and force as they had in both 2008 and 2012, they may want to consider that when you ignore your most loyal constituents for six years, and in fact make their life worse, don't expect them to come running to the polls for you during a midterm just because you show up the last few days like a former lover calling at midnight for a bootie-call, particularly when you've been delivering them the political equivalence of a canker sore. With all the problems facing that community, as well the nation as a whole, trying to convince them that having to show ID in order to vote is the single greatest problem in their life is a tough sell. Particularly when they themselves have an ID and would be hard pressed to find anyone they know who did not also possess one.

Although its foolhardy to read too much into any one given election to gauge the long-term feelings of the American people, this weeks Republican stampede has been long in the making. The campaign skills and novelty of President Obama served to forestall a Democratic Party dégringolade and helped feed the denial liberals and Progressives find themselves deeply in this week. We Republicans scored a huge victory tonight, a historic one, for which we should be proud. But this is not a conclusion, this is just the beginning. The same passion which we undertook to bring about this victory we need to bring to continue to press our party to become more open to new communities, new ideas and new voices, be they the black and Latino communities, younger voters or Tea Party conservatives, we need to keep on that path. We can bring this nation together and together we can bring this nation back from the dead. Democrats willingness to dismiss the feelings of the American people will only make that task easier. Rejoice!

2014 was simply the last hurrah of the extremist American reich right wing. Just a bunch of crazies demonstrating their unvarnished hatred for The Black Man in the White House! (trademark)

Thats pretty much their core message to their base. White liberals promising minority voters (whose lives and neighborhoods Progressives make unlivable) that soon whitey will die off and then they can “really get things done.” Its exactly the same dream of Charles Manson. Almost to the letter.

Republican Larry Hogan...trouncing highly favored Democrat Anthony Brown...with a comfortable five point margin

Probably closet to a 15 point margin if all the non citizen votes are subtracted from the totals. Then there are the other traditional vote fraud methods that are SOP in Maryland...

This no different than what certain sectors of the right would have done had the GOP not prevailed. Democrats(e) were soundly spanked and their wing-nuts feel empowered to save the day. Expect to see the RATS go way left.
