Either clockworks operate so efficiently, that neither one needs to be meddled with, but when they do malfunction, you can’t take it to Jose, and get the cheap parts from Tijuana, to fix it.
America did have a very successful clock and watch manufacturing operation at one time. Pocket watches that were built ‘to railroad standards’, were among the best watches available. Aviation navigators used precision pocketwatches, in the inflight computations needed. However, I digress.
