Al:Gun Beats Stick, Chief Pleased

Police Chief Chris Carden

Robbers who use clubs are very dangerous.  They often believe that they have to strike their victim to demonstrate seriousness.   In this case, the would be robber made a mistake in the victim selection process.  His victim was a CCW holder who drew his gun when threatened.   The would be robber ran off, but the armed  citizen was able to give a good description to the police, who quickly made an arrest.  From al.com:
"I am extremely proud of the good police work that came into play," Carden said. "They all did an outstanding job and they did it in a safe manner. I'm also extremely proud of the victim whom I spoke with today and thanked for his service."
It is nice to see Police Chief Chris Carden, of Sylacauga praise the armed citizen for his service in making the community a safer place.   Perhaps this is a trend that will continue.   We have Sheriff Clark of Milwaukee County, in Wisconsin praising armed victims who resist, as well as Chief Craig of Detroit.

The Chief said that the suspect, Bobby Dean Hall, 40, is in the county jail on a $20,000 bond.

The research that I recall showed that robbers armed with clubs injured people more often than robbers armed with guns.

You are your own first responder.

The police are, at best, second reponders.

EMTs and Coroners are tied for third.

The would be robber ran off ...

I admire the extreme restraint of the "concealed carry" individual - I would've emptied the clip into the SOB would-be robber!

You would be in a heap of trouble in most places. Shooting a man in the back is not acceptable, especially when he is running away from you. Even in the Wild West, that could get you a rope around your neck.

Unless you're a cop

The vast majority of people who legally carry arms show incredible restraint.

There are reasons for this.

First, legal firearm carriers in the United States, statistically, are extremely responsible. They do not want to kill another if they can avoid it.

Second, there are numerous legal, psychological, and financial costs that come with killing someone, even if it is completely justified. We might well be better off as a society if we found ways to lessen those costs for justifiable homicide.

Third, most criminals are not determined attackers, so the experience is that most criminals will run away, thus, hesitation often has no deleterious consequences.

Shoot him a couple of times, then turn him over and finish the job. Whose to say which slug hit him first?

the armed citizen was able to give a good description

Since I can't trust my memory for such things I'm just going to have to shoot the sorry bastard.

This sort of thing is readily apparent in a competent forensic investigation. If you are a cop, you will get away with it. If you are an average citizen without high-level political connections, you probably will be indicted.

Why turn him over...just keep shooting until the piece runs out of rounds. When questioned just say you didn’t realize you were doing that....fear and shock are reasonable defenses!!!
