30 years after his first presidential run, Jackson talks Obama, Civil Rights and the black vote.
Thirty years ago, Jesse Jackson made a historic run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Though he didnt win the primary, his candidacy in 1984 and subsequent run in 1988 spurred a record turnout of African-American voters, united progressives and posed a formidable challenge to a complacent Democratic Party leadership. Now we have a black president, whom Jackson supports, though at times critically. These days, Jackson has been making headlines for going down to Ferguson, Missouri, to join the protests and for his bid to diversify the tech industry, which he says is the next step in the civil rights movement.
So does Jackson feel that with Obama in the White House, his electoral work is done? In These Times sat down to talk with the 72-year-old civil rights veteran about social change and the role of elections.
Why did you decide to focus on diversifying the tech industry?
Theres an uneven playing field. Blacks dont have the same access to capital, industry or technology. The Silicon Valley companiesApple, Google, eBay, Amazonalmost none of these companies have a Black or Latino on their board of directors....

Jesssssaaaaaay JaCKson (Rushbo way of pronunciation) isn’t dead yet? GeezLaweez. He’s only in his early 70’s.
However, Jesse, just wait a few years.....our kids are headed downward.
In technical industries you have to know your stuff, understand the problems and the solutions, skin color does not apply.
Jessee jackson is a fetal alcohol born loser who has shaken down almost every industry. Sorry revrund, you actually have to know things to work in that business.
What a pusbag. I would like to think that at some point coarse laughter will erupt as the revrund makes his threats—and that it will not come from the ruling boards of directors of these companies but from his own “constituency”.
Jackson is getting old, race pimps never die though, they just get feeble, they never stop the hustle.
I will hope that my presence will be in the judgment when God puts jackson and sharpton on the left with the goats.
Revrund—we’ll see about that. In the interim you can spit in people’s hamburgers at McDonalds, which is the only job you ever had that was honest.
I am glad I don’t have to try to sleep at night being you. Not that it bothers you one bit, just that it would bother me. But then I still have dignity and integrity to satisfy, you on the other hand, would rape your own grandmother if there was money to be made.
Gee, that was harsh. I meant every GD word.
Talk about an obscure source.
God damn the pusher man.
Where’s my Bud franchise ?
The only thing "historic" about jesse's run that year was his miserable failure to garner any votes. That was of course before the Democratic Party was completely over run by Socialists and Marxists.
Jesse was a pioneer, all right. He was the first “vote for me because I’m black” candidate. A hero, a prophet before his time.
Got any mo’ money to contribute to his cause? /S
