Well I suppose that makes continuing the battle with my electric company over a smart meter pretty pointless.
Smart meters are actually okay. They are part of the electric utility’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. Most utilities have very well defended SCADA systems that are totally isolated from the Internet and therefore the IoT. I know there are some smart Things that third parties make which sit behind the meter and allow you to monitor, report and optimize your power usage, but the smart meter itself provided by the utility should be pretty safe.
