Obama and Arabs Find a Common Enemy—the Islamic State

Confrontation-adverse President Barack Obama, with warm feelings for Islam, took eight days and three tries to actually say he wanted to “destroy” ISIS

Given all the mutations that the Middle East has gone through thanks to the emergence of al Qaeda during the resistance to the Soviet takeover of Afghanistan, watching what is occurring now with an even more fanatical group calling itself the Islamic State (ISIS) and proclaiming itself the new caliphate has proven even more lethal and more feared.

The closest thing to a caliphate has been the assertion of al Saud, the royal family that runs Saudi Arabia who has long claimed to be the protector of Islam’s two most holy sites, Mecca and Medina, and of the true form of its expression, the strict Wahhabi interpretation. Were it not for its oil, the royals would have had to live off the earnings from the hajj, the visit to Mecca that all Muslims are required to make at least once in their lifetime.

In the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, the HEART of the petroleum/natural gas fields, many Saudis are Shi'ites. They live there amid the Sunnis.

The only time there is trouble is during the Shi'ite times when the YOUNG Shi'ite man beat up on themselves in penitential fervor. It is FROWNED on and FORBIDDEN by the Saudis so...the soldiers come in and beat the living tar outta the Shi'ites in Saudi Arabia.

Then, it's over and done with.
My boss was a Shi'ite.

There are TONS of holy sites for BOTH Shi'ites and Sunnis in and around that area.

We went to Qatif once because the Qatif fish market was supposed to be "superior."

It STANK (!!!!) and I retreated FAST back to the nice air conditioned bus, kept running with the door closed.

Why do you go to the fish market when fresh hamoor is so much better.

Set your trot lines out at night baited with squid, come back the next morning and haul in fresh fish. Gut it and place in freezer for an hour until tough skin is frozen. Rip it off with pliers and you have naked hamoor.

Or go surf casting in the evening for subaity.

With all the fish I caught in the Gulf when I lived there, I must have left the waters depleted.

So sorry.

The fresh hamur wasn't always as fresh as it should have been. But, it WAS delicious when it was. Nice, white sea fish.
There USED to be fresh shell fish right there on the beaches of the Eastern Province...but that WAS finally "fished out."

We had a 16 foot catamaran that we toodled around in. We saw a couple of dolphins and a sea snake once. The dolphins were HUGE and would have ker-plunked our cat at any time. They just wanted to PLAY. :o)

We used to buy life shrimp by the trash can long before Jubail became the industrial complex.

Their shrimp was fabulous, I gotta say that.
Too bad the petroleum industry did away with so much of it.

Did your wife ever buy any of those FRESH WATER pearls from Bahrain? I did buy a beautiful fresh water pearl ring. I believe it's the only place they grow in nature.

Imagine, fresh water pearls right off the Saudi shore there...so VERY SALTY a gulf. What an anomaly of nature.
