“Looks like Russia is becoming a WORLD POWER again, too bad we’re going the other way...”

Just obama staying ‘flexible’ is all.

Is there any level of military spending that will make you Obama apologists start to point out that we cannot spend so little and be a world power?

We spend more on defense then the next 10 countries combined. How much do you think we should be spending?

4 to 5 percent of GNP, if we want to remain a world power and be respected...a bit under twice what we spend now. You’re happy with the bogus numbers used by the Left in tearing down our military. Same arguments used by your side during the Cold War. Thankfully Carter/Reagan knew better.

Thanks, says a lot.

BobL’s statements have nothing to do with spending anyway, they are about claiming that Russia is militarily stronger than, not only the United States, but all of NATO.

It isn’t about spending, it is about capabilities, the U.S. has cut spending but that doesn’t change the facts that the U.S capabilities are vastly superior to Russia, and added to the 27 other nations of NATO, it is incredible, the Russian military is not large, nor advanced, not well experienced, and a war would exhaust it pretty quickly and leave Russia open to it’s real enemies.

BobL doesn’t understand that if he wants to talk about the military budget, then he should, but instead he is terribly confused, and instead keeps ranting nonsense about the military capabilities.

Not sure what the Canadian complaint was, this is Russian territory.

Maybe Canada should expand the base at Alert and the US should beef up their footprint in the former Russian territory of Alaska.

You mean so that Germany and France and England and Italy and Japan can spend 1 or 2 percent on defense and have us do their dirty work.

“BobL doesn’t understand that if he wants to talk about the military budget, then he should, but instead he is terribly confused, and instead keeps ranting nonsense about the military capabilities.”

Funny, I was VERY SPECIFIC in what this country should spend on its military if it wants to remain a superpower. THAT IS MY PROBLEM. Our good looks alone will NOT defeat militaries that have been MODERNIZING for the past 2 decades.

As to NATO, other than what’s left of the US presence, it is a TOTAL JOKE and has been for DECADES now. Why do you think the UNITED STATES had to bomb the Serbs into submission? The rest of NATO didn’t stand a prayer against them and DEMANDED our forces (and unlike the Russians, the Serbs did not have top-line hardware). You don’t seem to accept that.

As to NATO now, how about this article:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/germany/11057330/German-fighter-jets-unable-to-fly-and-mechanics-forced-to-borrow-spare-parts-claims-magazine.html

Your GLORIOUS NATO military ain’t worth jack (other than the handful of US units). I’m feel bad for you, if you cannot ACCEPT that.

“You mean so that Germany and France and England and Italy and Japan can spend 1 or 2 percent on defense and have us do their dirty work. “

We always spent a higher percentage of GNP than other NATO countries, but the countries still spent a respectable amount (3 to 4.5 percent, with the Brits being the highest). Now they don’t spend a damn thing - so if we want NATO to have ANY TEETH, then YES, we have to carry the water for them, and we also have to base more troops there.

And no, we CANNOT DO THAT with a GUTTED budget that’s about to get hammered yet again, and it is NOT JUST ME saying it.

So, if you guys don’t mind, I’d rather beef up our military first than go on adventures right now.

Conservatives used to have that position...

“The major goal of the latest expedition of the North fleet ships to the Arctic is to deliver personnel, equipment and property of the North fleet’s tactical group, which starting this year is going to fulfill military service at the New Siberian Islands on a permanent basis,

Yeah....and the seven islands Obama gave the Russians make this easier...

Obama’s State Department is giving away seven strategic, resource-laden Alaskan islands to the Russians. Yes, to the Putin regime in the Kremlin.

The seven endangered islands in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea include one the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The Russians are also to get the tens of thousands of square miles of oil-rich seabeds surrounding the islands. The Department of Interior estimates billions of barrels of oil are at stake.

The State Department has undertaken the giveaway in the guise of a maritime boundary agreement between Alaska and Siberia. Astoundingly, our federal government itself drew the line to put these seven Alaskan islands on the Russian side. But as an executive agreement, it could be reversed with the stroke of a pen by President Obama or Secretary Clinton.

The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the negotiations, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition – but the State Department doesn’t seem to care.

Again, why should I want to pay for defending countries that don't want to defend themselves? If NATO is a joke, and it's pretty much reached that point, then we should drop out and let them muddle along on their own.

And no, we CANNOT DO THAT with a GUTTED budget that’s about to get hammered yet again, and it is NOT JUST ME saying it.

Maybe it's time other countries restored money to their's? So, if you guys don’t mind, I’d rather beef up our military first than go on adventures right now.

But that's what you want it for, isn't it? Another crack at nation building in Iraq once we've taken out ISIS. Restore democracy to the Ukraine once we've beaten back the Russian horde. Send the fleet against China so Japan doesn't have to.

You just keep ranting and don’t post any actual facts to support your bizarre Putin fantasy that Russia is the world’s premier global power and that the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Poland Czech Republic, and 22 more nations are no match for the 766,000 russian military.

I think that you not having ever been in the military, and not not knowing anything about such things, reads articles about budget cuts and a inadequacies that always haunt militaries, and conclude that it means that we are weak, and that Russia is some all-powerful force of modernity and purity that sits astride the entire world.

How do you think they man that top world class Navy, and Air Force, and ground forces, with only 766,000 people?

How many do you think that they can spare against the West, without their country coming apart internally, and splitting up in independence wars?

I think this has more to do with protecting Russia’s grab of minerals in the Artic.

So, big bad Russia can attack broken down military’s in their former Republic’s and the ice in the tundra.

Color me not impressed.

Russia is Iraq with better ballet.

“Restore democracy to the Ukraine once we’ve beaten back the Russian horde.”

LOL, you haven’t been arguing with me the past few weeks. JUST THE OPPOSITE for Ukraine. I don’t think we have ANY BUSINESS there, but a bunch of people on this site (including on this thread) somehow think we should start WW3 against Russia and then defeat them on the ground in Ukraine (fat chance).

If it were up to me, I’d still beef the crap up out of our military (because the S-400 SAMS can shoot down any of our aircraft with ease now, and because the Chinese hypersonic cruise missiles can now sink our carriers).

But I would also be a bit careful as to who we engage and where. I could CARE LESS if Russia takes a piece of Ukraine, and I certainly don’t want to try engaging Russia in their backyard given the condition of our military today.

As to Western Europe, they’re not threatened by Russia at this time, so I don’t worry about them. As to Japan, S. Korea, and Taiwan - I do consider them in our interest (the last thing I want is to have to give up my Japanese cars and buy a UAW piece of crap, for example) and we should being supporting them and helping them build up their militaries, but maintain the capability to engage China effectively, if necessary, to defend those countries.

They don’t want the oil, they just want to protect the Arctic environment from others who would drill up there.

So you think that Russia would control the air and have air superiority while attacking the United States and NATO?

Why would Putin want to destroy himself and the 140 million people of Russia in total nuclear annihilation, if he can defeat us conventionally on the seas, in the air, and on the ground, as you claim?

Can you explain that?

“So you think that Russia would control the air and have air superiority while attacking the United States and NATO?”

If they have their S-400s in position, EASILY!

Next question?
