I guess storing personal data on the cloud isn't such a good idea after all...

Probably a publicity stunt. Clever way to get an aspiring starlet’s name in the news.

Isn’t the CIA using a cloud service from Amazon?

Original title for the piece is: “Did iCloud’s ‘Find My iPhone’ function help hacker steal ‘nude’ photos of Jennifer Lawrence and 100 other celebrities? Flaw may have allowed 4chan hacker to break into their accounts” but it wouldn’t fit...

victims - 101 in total

Sort of pales in comparison to other recent hacks. Am not a tech but have a question. Could this hack be an entry point (caught) but platform hacked could be used for other entries on other platforms?

If you store anything outside your own physical media or hard drive then it is outside your control. If nothing else, system administrators would be able to see it. Does anyone really believe a sysadmin wouldn’t take a peek at a celebrity’s account?

If you don’t want anyone to see it, keep it secured!

Anyone, especially celebrities, who take nude photos of themselves are idiots. It is too easy to steal those digital photos and you can bet that sooner or later they will get posted somewhere on the Internet.

What a strange industry where people run around showing so much intimacy. No wonder they are all crazy.

Golly, now who *wouldn’t* want a whole bunch of nude, Joe Biden selfies?

I have a professional interest in understanding security breaches. There are so many ways your smart phone can be hacked. Hacking an iCloud account is definitely one way, but there are much simpler ways.

Possibilities for the source of the breach I haven’t seen discussed much:

1) Not suggesting this is the most likely, but, NSA or other government agency employee.
2) Hackers operating a rogue cell phone tower
3) Unsecured WiFi hotspot. (Google DroidSheep or FaceNiff)

Snooping on unsecured WiFi hotspots is the most likely source of the breach IMO. Paparazzi follow these people around like a pack of rabid dogs and their business is to get pictures. They couldn’t sell these pictures, but it is a pretty small leap to think they might try to get them and trade them.

People turn their WiFi on while on their home network and then go somewhere without turning it off and the phone connects to every hotspot you get within range of. Anything sent or received over WiFI can be intercepted, including your girlfriends nekkid pics. Retailers can track you in their store using your WiFi signal.
