The Islamic State that controls parts of Iraq and Syria has proclaimed itself to be The Caliphate. If it continues its successes and captures the rest of Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, especially Kurdistan, then it will be The Caliphate. That does not mean that it will rule all of Islam. The Caliphate in the 600s pretty much did. After that there were two or three Caliphates, in Spain, North Africa, and the ME. Eventually there was only one at Istanbul which died with the Ottoman Empire. Ideally there is only one Caliphate to rule all Moslems. Actually that won't happen again. There may be one Caliphate to rule some Moslems, all the Paynim that one faction can conquer and only for so long as they all stay conquered.

Moslems are conquerors and pirates almost by definition- it's in the Book- and an Islamic polity cannot produce sufficient wealth to buy or build the technology required to keep any really large entity together. They can keep growing so long as the West feeds the Beast which the West has been doing ever since the Sauds were allowed to nationalize Arabian oil and so long as America keeps sending money and arms directly to Moslems, any Moslems.

If the West collapses and Islam sweeps over the world then Islam will proceed to depopulate the world as the Left would love to see happen. Moslem societies produce only sufficient for bare subsistence of the masses and a little more that supports .5% or so in splendour becaues the Caliph or Sultan or Dey steals all the excess over bare subsistence, so the people have no incentive to produce. As droughts and storms and internecine raiding destroy production and crops, famine becomes a recurrent phenomenon and population declines. Technology regresses and the machines are destroyed in righteous religious fervor or just wear out. Cropland is converted to semiarid sheep ranges as happened to North Africa and Anatolia which were once the breadbaskets of Rome and Byzantium.

All of that is why the idealistic (insane) Left is in love with Islam. They don't wish to be Moslem but they feel, at least subconsciously, that Islam must prevail to depopulate and Save the Earth.
