He ended up in the hospital twice, the second time in Intensive Care. We did, however search and find a shelter that promises they will not put down any dogs entrusted to them, and we eventually met the new, adoptive owner.

sorry you had to do that. there are genuine cases of allergies, i know, i am allergic to cats and to certain breeds of dogs.
the majority of turn ins that say ‘allergies’ are not really because of allergies.
