Israel Minister of Intelligence Dr. Yuval Steinitz: Will PA, Hamas Honor Agreements, Destroy Missiles In Gaza?

Jerusalem, Israel --- Part of the following was communicated by the Israel's Minister of Intelligence's Media Adviser to the Israel News Agency.

Israel Minister of Intelligence Dr. Yuval Steinitz has, today (Thursday, 5 June 2014), released the following statement:

"Pursuant to US Secretary of State John Kerry's statement to the effect that the new Palestinian government is 'committed to previous agreements', we must ask: Is it his intention to now demand that Abu Mazen and his government publicly reiterate their commitment to 'the principle of complete demilitarization' which constitutes a cornerstone of the Oslo accords, and to begin dismantling and destroying the thousands of missiles stationed in the Gaza Strip?

If not, the Palestinian remarks about 'honoring previous agreements' border on deception and fraud."

Hamas, a recognized, international terror organization, has over 10,000 fighters and maintains an arsenal of thousands of missiles and rockets, all of which are explicitly prohibited by the 1995 Oslo II Accords.

The recent unity pact between Fatah and Hamas ignores any efforts to take control of Hamas’s illegal forces and weapons, breaching blackletter US legislation conditioning US aid on the PA fulfilling previously signed agreements.

Israel Ambassador Ron Dermer said Israel was “deeply disappointed” in the State Department’s decision to continue dealing with the Palestinian Authority now that it has Hamas support.

“Israel is deeply disappointed with the State Department’s comments today on the Palestinian unity government with Hamas, a terrorist organization responsible for the murder of many hundreds of Israelis, which has fired thousands of rockets at Israeli cities, and which remains committed to Israel’s destruction,” Dermer said in a Facebook posting.

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations supported congressional action for reviewing aid to the Palestinians.

“We urge the United States and other governments to be vigilant in their judgment of and dealings with the newly declared government,” the foreign policy umbrella of the Jewish community said in a statement. “We call on President Abbas to return to the negotiations with Israel and not engage in this charade.”

Even left wing groups in both Israel and the US are calling for a review of the new Hamas, PA government’s policies, condemning Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh for recently calling on Palestinians to “pursue the choice of resistance.”

Hamas was formed in 1987 at the beginning of the first Palestinian Intifada (uprising). Its roots are in the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, and it is supported by a powerful social/political structure inside the Palestinian territories. Hamas's charter calls for establishing an Islamic Palestinian state in place of Israel and rejects all agreements made between the PLO and Israel.

During the last war in the Gaza Strip, Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists formed a joint command to coordinate rocket attacks against Jewish civilians in Israeli cities and towns. More recently, it was revealed that Fatah's armed wing, Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, also helped Hamas fire rockets at Israel in recent years.

Hamas has deplored the killing of Osama bin Laden by US forces, with Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas in the Gaza Strip, describing bin Laden as a martyr.

They will destroy them by firing them at the Israelis.
