The real blame here lies with the cops (not excusing the perp, of course).

In this instance they actually met and talked with the perp due to some of the crazy crapola he had posted. They knew he was nuts and making threats. And then he posted the crazy video a whole day before the rampage. How's that? I viewed the video. It clearly constitutes the crime of criminal threats in California.

In general, these events are mostly caused by seriously deranged people, most of whom were known. The guy who shot the Congresswoman Gifford in AZ,for example, was worshipping a skull in his parents' backyard. C'mon.

There's no disagreement that a guy like this who is known to have made credible threats not only should not have had a gun but should have been under 72 hour (at least) observation after he posted his initial "manifesto" and plan online a year ago. Maybe even charges could have been filed at that time and he would at least have been on probation - maybe even ankle monitor, by now

Libtards are again making a straw man argument. They want to use this case to take away my gun. But nobody in their right mind would disagree that a guy who's obviously gone around the bend like the UCSB shooter should be stripped of his 2nd Amendment rights.

The cops really dropped the ball on this one. So much for "to serve and to protect." Those victims and their families and the public at large can't be feeling real protected right now. Indeed, he clearly should have been in the criminal justice system - maybe in mental health court or something - for over a year now.

I hope that at least somebody in the media will hold the cops' feet to the fire on this one and demand an explanation why the shooter wasn't picked up for the crime of criminal threats (I'm a CA criminal defense lawyer - as I said the stuff he posted the day before the shooting was clearly - I mean beyond the shadow of a doubt - constituted the crime of terrorist threats). In fact, given the detail and the background, the DA probably could have pressed a felony conviction and given him a year in jail to cool his heels. There's absolutely no excuse why this moron wasn't in custody awaiting arraignment first court day next Tuesday.

We have freedoms in this country. You can not jail pe0ple for what they post on youtube (unless you actually threaten the President). You can not commit someone unless they are an ACTIVE DANGER TO THEMSELVES OR OTHERS AT THE TIME OF THE POLICE VISIT. Police can not monitor every person in a city who is stupid, goofy, says threatening stuff or is off balance. You have no idea how many citizens that would be.

Of course, if YOU want to give the State that power to detain and hold anyone who might do something at some future date...change the law and oh, btw, you might feel “safer” in a totalitarian country where that is tolerated, all in the name of “public safety”.

I can’t believe how many people on this thread are screaming for the police—THE STAE, THE GOVT—to ‘do something!!!” so we can be safer. Hitler was very , very popular for making Germany “safer” and the Germans were very happy to see the sudden reduction in crime.
