My retired peace officer friends have told me that prosecution in cases where a private individual buys a firearm without a reasonable knowledge that it is stolen, are unheard of.

He's living in the past. Now, the feds are likely to target you first, and then find something to charge you with. In the old days, they were interested in finding criminals. Now they are interested in making criminals.

Stolen or not, what about guns used in a crime? Your proof of purchase is somewhat vague with a private purchase. What if a subsequent ballistics test, say when you use the firearm for self defense, shows it to be a murder weapon?

The ONLY “required” paperwork, here in Louisiana, is WHEN you purchase a firearm, through a gun shop, with the FBI NICS phone call, today, not 3 days, a week, or longer.

No “registration”, in order to get the “permit” to buy said firear.

Private sales? What receipt?

Here in Florida we can run a serial number on the FDLE site to see if it has been reported stolen.

FDLE stolen gun search

Unfortunately it only covers those reported stolen in Florida. We really need access to a database that covers all the states.

In the several years that I've used the FDLE site I 've come across only one that was reported stolen. Fortunately I ran the number before I purchased it. ( Thank God for Smartphones with internet access)
