Republican senator Mike Lee has an op-ed decrying cronyism. But first, he says, the Republicans must purge the unseemly activity from within its "own ranks."
"[T]o fix what’s broken in Washington and our economy," Lee writes in National Review Online, "a still-distrusted GOP first must end cronyism in our own ranks. The GOP has to close its branch of the Beltway Favor Bank and truly embrace a free-enterprise economy of, by, and for the people."

Either we go back to the state legislatures nominating senators, or we limit them to one single six-year term. Presently, It’s a “Lordship for life” deal.

Right now politicians are allowed to collect much more money than they need to run for office and they can then hand that out to other candidates as political favors for voting along with them.
I don't think this would in any way be an infringement of anybody's first amendment rights if the money I give to Candidate X has to be spent only on getting Candidate X reelected.
Senators have a 6 year term limit now, the people just aren't engaged and informed enough to implement it. Otherwise, agree. The Senators now represent the parties instead of the states. Until/unless this is changed, I don't have a problem with money coming in from outside the states and influencing elections. I don't get to vote for or against McConnell or Reid. but they certainly influence my life, so I should get to influence whether they are elected or not.

Nope. They represent themselves. GOP Senators peel off to play for Team Dem all the time. GOP leadership doesn’t do a thing to keep them in the GOP column and allows mavericks free reign in the Senate.
How does having state legislatures elect Senators help? I work with state legislators regularly. And the capitol is a cesspool of cronyism and favors.
The folks who would be elected would be the GOP-E of GOP-Eers.
I understand the problem of cronyism. But I am not sure how election by the state legislators helps that.

There's the solution. Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment and restore control of the Senate to the States. No more multi-million dollar Senate campaigns. No need for term limits. Simple solutions make the best government.
