In another measure of just how important raising the minimum wage is to President Obama and the Democratic party, the White House issued a statement on the Connecticut legislatures vote to increase the state rate to $10.10 per hour.

Wait til more people are forced out of their jobs because employers cant afford them.
And look for more machines to start appearing in fast food places.
You got it. It will simply speed up automation.
Less jobs, more machines, increased prices on all goods.
$8.25 p/h = $3.50 Big Mac
$10.10 p/h = $4.00 Big Mac
Good luck with that Connecticut!!
....Although Malloy and Obama CLAIMED that will not happen.
Does the minimum wage law apply to both part-time and full-time workers? People that are used to getting a little overtime now and then can probably kiss that extra income goodbye.
...that will not happen.”
how could it not? Is BO going to pump fed money into CT to avoid it? Like the NYSE? If McDonalds dares to increase prices will they be shut down by the IRS for “price gouging”?
Who's humping who here?
Would not surprise me if IRS does have that happen.
I would contend that at $10.10/hr fast food restaurants and other low-wage enterprises will be more likely to hire better employees, and keep them. With better employees, it just might be that four workers can do the work that five do now, and that would be a savings because it's less employees that get benefits. If they can attract and keep better employees, that's less training expense.
In most of CT, this is symbolic. Starting fast food workers have earned more than $10/hour for years.
There's a Law of Diminishing Returns. At some optimal wage, profit is maximized. FWIW, most of the chains are paying $10-$11 start around here (just outside Cleveland) to attract and keep better employees.
I would contend that $10.10 will NOT hire better employees. It’s still not worth it for someone to get off entitlements. The same “quality” of people will be applying.
Now that it’s $10.10 minimum (and as we all know, most fast food etc pays that now) $11-$12 p/h will have to be offered. I would further argue that 4 workers are already doing the work of 5 based on the PERCEPTION that they’re doing the work of 5.
The work ethic of a Father of 4 would be much higher then what they have to hire now. And that Father likely has a better paying job as it is. Fast food restaurants have their kitchens down to a science and I doubt they can streamline any more then they already do.
That big “thump” you just heard was thousands of untrained or marginally productive workers hitting the unemployment line.
What I notice when I walk into a McD's (etc) is that they have to pay someone to stare at their employees every minute and do the work for them if you do something "confusing" like order a McChicken without a roll. They don't seem to have any employees that stay very long, so training must be a constant expense.
Republicans want to appeal to the mainstream? Go out there and campaign for the higher minimum wage with the caveat that jobs have to go to qualified and competent US citizens before foreigners, legal or illegal are even considered for the job.
The other part of your concern....too many freebies. Well, yeah. Part of turning things around is ending being unemployed as a comfortable life choice.

...the government dictating who an employer hires? That’s not what privately run business does. The most qualified and/or trainable candidate gets the job.
US jobs should go to US citizens. Are you a RINO?
I’m no RINO. You said foreigners, “legal and illegal”. I’m all for kicking illegals out of the US. But if you’re here legally and are qualified for a job, and that employer wants to hire you he should retain the right to do so.
Green cards are given in cases where qualified US citizens are willing and capable worker. I've seen cases in my wanderings where family members of green card holders get jobs over qualified US citizens. I've seen legal immigrants taking jobs that US citizens could be doing. A lot of them are here legally because it's too easy for some to have that permission. Why not tighten the rules, so employers have to look for US citizen employees and non-citizens are a last resort?
