Sometimes I think these institutions put these thugs up to this sort of thing to give them an excuse to turn to the dark side.

You’re probably right, and it sucks that ANYONE would even remotely consider giving in.
The faculty is probably riddled with brainwashed, white-guilted liberal cowards who’s sole purpose in life is to kiss the asses of whatever aggrieved protected victim group whines the loudest at any given moment.
But to threaten violent action - if I remember correctly, that USED to be called a “Terroristic Threat” - and roll-over compliance or not, Law Enforcement should be immediately investigating it.
If a group can’t sit down and explain WHY they think they need their requests - not “demands” - met, and they have to threaten folks, then the validity of their grievance is null and void.
Convince me why I should acquiesce with rational logic and reasoned debate, and I’ll consider all sides and make a rational decision on it. Threaten me with physical violence, and “Well, boys, looks like War’s just been Declared.”
