New Zealand View of United States 2013 Second Amendment Battle
Gun Watch ^ | 9 January, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

The Blaze carried a story devoted to Mayor Bloomberg's intermingling of his private passion for infringing on the second amendment with his use of public funds to do so.  Among the comments was this insightful reply from nzkiwi:

While we all believed that there were underhanded machinations afoot, it is never-the-less surprising to see clear proof.

American gun owners should take considerable satisfaction that the law of unintended consequences came to their aid, however.

Determined efforts to increase gun control by President Obama, supported by Mayor Bloomberg and others, caused such alarm in your nation that there are now more gun owners in America than at any time in your country’s history.

Gun ownership has increased a whopping 66% under this administration’s watch. In 2013 alone, there were nearly 22 million FBI background checks.. Smith and Wesson’s sales increased by 25% over 2012 while Sturm, Ruger’s receipts jumped 45%. Demand strained gun manufacturer’s ability to supply.

The story gets worse for those who would disarm your citizens. Far more people than previously have made themselves aware of the 2nd Amendment’s vital importance. Piers Morgan’s bitter televised wrangles have brought the issue front and centre, causing previously uninformed people to examine the obvious facts and logic of the arguement.

Far from berating Mayor Bloomberg and President Obama, I think both should be presented with a gold-plated AR15 and a plaque expressing your nation’s gratitude for re-invigorating America’s Constitutional commitment to an armed citizenry.
Not to do so would be downright churlish…

Nzkiwi has the perspicacity to see what many gun owners already know.   The more the debate about the second amendment is in the news, the more people become informed on the issues.   The more people become informed on the issues, the more people move from mildly anti- rights to neutral, or from neutral to second amendment supporter.  The more facts people read and the more history they learn, the more support that is given to the second amendment.

This has been true since at least the 1960's, and has been accelerated by the Internet with its ease of obtaining numerous viewpoints on an issue, and of checking statements to determine their accuracy.

This is why Governor Cuomo had to push through the New York "Safe Act" in the dead of night in a manner that clearly violated the New York state Constitution.   If there had been open debate  on the "Safe Act", it would never have passed.

Support for bans on handguns is at the lowest level it has been for 50 years.   The logic to ban anything other than handguns, which are the vast majority of firearms used in crime, is far less persuasive than it is for handguns.  Those who wish to disarm the citizenry are getting desperate.   They know it is now, or never.   Even observers from overseas can see it.

I didn’t realize that the push for gun control caused such a frenzy of gun purchases. Wow.

The only economic growth that this administration has stimulated is gun sales! Imagine that. The irony.

I know you just signed up a year ago, but you've really got to hang out here more often. Obama's been Gun Salesman of The Year for five years running now.

I have seen “gun salesman of the year” stuff before. I’m shocked at the AMOUNT.

Perhaps after Obama we’ll have worse, all those gun sales will be a boon!

Andrew Cuomo is a bigger fascist than Mussolini ever dreamed of being.

Take warning, paisano.

Oh yeah. When the Dems tried to push their last gun control package through Congress, it sent gun sales through the roof. There were multiple stories posted here about how the numbers of guns sold during that time, were enough to outfit the armies of China and India both!

The other irony is that the main thing keeping this economy afloat is fossil fuels.

If you like your guns and fossil fuels you’ll have to fight to keep them.

“Odumbo, the greatest gun salesman in American history”.

Now THAT is one positive thing he did accomplish.

It is also worth noting that ammo manufacturers still can’t keep up with demand. Visit your local Wal-Mart with someone firearms knowledgeable to see proof.

It’s getting better. The selection at the local WMT is improving week by week.

I got into an extended discussion on another forum the other day, pointing out that we have essentially won the battle for public opinion on the gun control issue. Others contended we on the contrary were fighting a desperate rear guard action against gun control forces about to win.

The chart at the head of the article proves my point better than anything I came up with. What an amazing turnaround! It’s difficult to get 75% of Americans to agree on anything.

Thanks for posting.

Hmmm, maybe it’s time to look again. It has been a month or so. Still no bulk .45 or .22.

I agree with you. If you want to talk about desperate rear guard actions against gun control forces about to win, remember the 1970s.

You can readily expect the gun grabbing socialist left is simply laying in wait until the next ‘horrific’ tragedy they can exploit.

They have to know they are other like the nutcases of the past who want to ‘up the ante’ on the butchers bill and make a name for themselves – to which the National Socialist Media is only too willing to accommodate.

Why do you think that they refuse to protect school children or insist on those ridiculous ‘gun-free’ zones?

The best we on the side of liberty can do is prepare for that eventuality – just as we need to prepare for the upcoming debt crises and the government’s attempts at wealth redistribution.
