I like Linux Mint but I am confused by all the variations. Cinnamon, MATE, KDE, etc.

I believe ALL are Live... you just have to install/run them correctly....
I don't even have a cd/dvd on my PC anymore.. only external, besides net, is USB...
UNbootin have cut many options... but it IS still usable... like I said, I had to go prehistoric, and reformat my flash to FAT16 (more or less Win95)...
after about 5 retry (live)boots, ending in fail.... I did that (reformat to the FAT16)... reinstall (using UNetboot)... worked first time, after I reformatted before I, again, installed the new OS (Mint KDE 16)..

The partitioning is up to you.. but I manually did 1. boot - 2. SWAP- 3. Root- 4. Home ....

I had to go to Ubuntu on account of Fedora’s feverish upgrade timelines.

Ubuntu releases just as often as Fedora--twice a year. The difference is that while Ubuntu's LTS is still called Ubuntu, Red Hat's LTS is called Red Hat--and Fedora remains the semi-annual update. While Red Hat does charge for their flagship, CentOS and others do release their copy fairly shortly after RH releases.

I’m on F18 and F19 here. I still don’t like how they’ve changed some of the device stuff. (i.e., mounting USB devices under /run)

OH!!!! 1 Thing I have had a problem with since I started Linux... could never find a way to control the fan speed on the GPU/Vid Card... (in my case, nVidia)

VERY simple way, was always hidden from us :/

Linux comes in several parts. You have the kernel, which almost all distros share. Then you have the package maintenance method, which typically boils down to Debian-based (.deb packages and Ubuntu variations), and then on top of all that, you have desktops, which are actually quite separate from the OS--Cinnamon, MATE, KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc.

You can install any desktop you like on the OS of your choice. You do not need to pick your OS based on the desktop you choose. The desktop is merely an application.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Always looking for distros for less technical folks. Will have to run it in a VM though.

Mint is still mostly based on Ubuntu... Even this Mint KDE has Deb AND Ubuntu repositories...

There was a time from Fedora 8 through Fedora 12 where they were releasing almost monthly, Shadow. I switched to Ubuntu back in the 8.04 days.

Ok, you mentioned Cinn/Mate/KDE... those are the eye candy you want to see(DE-Desktop Environment, I believe)... that is the outside..... most important is the inside..

Many people prefer 1 Mint (should be Linux/Unix) environment over the other.. this is what Linux is all about (besides being free, and open souce).... you can make and build your own system...

I prefer KDE because I have more control over what I do, and how I make it.... Mate is simple for the people who want no fuss and low pc usage (overhead)/// Cinn is good for the people who want eye candy and simple usage (a little more resource heavy)... you ... et me rephrase that.. YOU.. have the options of doing exactly what YOU want to do WITH YOUR PC (even macs are using it now... although, MAC doesn't acknowledge that MAC is based on UNIX..... :p)


BTW, I am still more comfy in DOS 6.2-6.22 than Win 3.0-3.11 }.{

You could try Oracle Linux 6.5, CentOS 6.5, or PCLinuxOS 2013.12. Oracle Linux is an enterprise-class distribution based on the recently-released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 as is CentOS 6.5, whereas PCLinuxOS is more of a redhat-type distro. Looks good in the screenshots, I must admit.

I think with very few exceptions most distros these days are live-disc versions, with generally the specialist distros (security, firewall, kiosk) only mandating an install.

I know. Oracle came to us a few months ago to try to talk us into switching from RH. We couldn't see much of an upside other than price, though. And it wasn't that big of a price cut.

RH and Oracle are not very friendly right now. RH much prefers CentOS as a "competitor" than Oracle.
