Counter Assault bear spray and UDAP pepper spray are both made in Montana, where I live, and come with the highest recommendations.
Indeed I was elk hunting in the mountains yesterday and bumped into another hunter who was carrying UDAP (even though this time of year the bears are almost always sleeping, which is why I had left my Counter Assault at home).
We got to talking and he repeated the claim I have heard many times, that even the tough Coastal Alaska wilderness guides count on spray just as much as they do .44 mag revolvers, shotguns loaded with slugs, and so on.
An eight-ounce can of the brands I mention will immobilize your assailant and probably clear the store for half a day.
p.s. Now that I have written all this I see that New Jersey even regulates defensive sprays, although you are allowed a single small canister. I must say I would pick one out that you are comfortable with and carry it, rules be damned. You aren’t going to badly harm anyone and the risk of a pepper spray violation is far less that than of bodily assault.

True dat. I carry the stuff for bears although like you, I’ve put it away for the season just now. But it’s my first resort when I’m looking at an approach by Mr. Bear. First, it’s easier to hit him than with my second resort, a S&W .44 magnum, and second, you don’t have a dead bear to explain away to Fish & Game...
It will be white folks who try to defend themselves who will be shipped off.
If we have to fight in the streets, we will have to be prepared for a civil war against our own government.

This ‘game’ has been going on for years. I’m surprised more cities aren’t coming forward with reports... Guess the PC police still run more police departments...
If you are not alert and aware, no defensive mechanism will help much. The whole point of surprise is to nullify defensive measures.
Do not allow an unknown or suspicious person to be within 10 feet of you, Keep that defensive tool at hand, and the potential aggressor aware that you are aware. At 7 feet, let your defensive device be seen, maybe one of these:
- pepper spray, or
- bear spray, or
- mace, or
- folder knife, or
- small spray can of fluorescent paint, or
- small can of hair spray in one hand and a Bic lighter in the other, or
- metal mechanical pencil or pen
