(CNN) - Sen. Ted Cruz argued Thursday that people are starting to understand why he and other conservative activists embraced a strategy that tried to derail Obamacare this year but instead resulted in last month's government shutdown.
Speaking at the Aspen Institute's Washington Ideas Forum in Washington, the Texas Republican said the troubled rollout of HealthCare.gov and revelations of people losing their health care insurance have led to changed feelings about his strategy.
"A few weeks ago there were lots of people - particularly in Washington - that were saying, 'Why are you guys fighting so hard on this?' And with just the passage of a few weeks, people aren't asking that anymore," he said.
Cruz added that those who joined him in the effort are feeling "vindication" in the wake of a barrage of negative headlines about the botched Obamcare rollout.
"We've seen that those millions of Americans were right, and I wish Congress had listened to them before" people began getting cancellation notices, he said.
Asked if the shutdown was worth it, Cruz said, "Absolutely."
Among those who are changing their tune, he said, are some of the same congressional Democrats who refused to compromise on Obamacare earlier this year.

Fox News anchor Christ Wallace asked Cruz at the Aspen Institutes Washington Ideas Forum Thursday if it was worth it.
Absolutely, Cruz replied.
Democrats and centrist GOP lawmakers blamed Cruz for provoking the standoff that led to the government shutdown on Oct. 1. He led the charge to push House Republican leadership to only fund the government as long as ObamaCare was defunded.
In the days leading up to the deadline, Cruz spoke on the Senate floor for more than 21 hours about the consequences of ObamaCare. The laws insurance marketplaces launched Oct. 1.
After the government reopened last month, top Republicans approached Fox Newss Wallace, he said, and offered research and questions to confront Cruz.
If a Republican in Washington attacks Republicans from the left, this room will stand up and cheer for them. Thats a very popular thing in Washington, Cruz said Thursday. But if someone stands up and makes a point that I tell ya, people are feeling all over the country which is that career politicians in both parties are focused on their own reelection instead of the pain people feel in this country that is not a message people want to hear in Washington.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) spoke at the Ideas Forum just before Cruz and commented on his colleague's tactics.
Shutting down the government injured the people of my state, he said angrily.
I am elected to represent them. When we have to fly food from the food banks in Phoenix up to Tucson, a community outside the Grand Canyon, because people are out of food, then I have to say, Stop. Youre wrong. Youre crazy.
Cruz should demand an apology from President Obama. Apparently Cruz was right and Obama now agrees with him. The name calling wasn’t necessary and was pretty mean and vindictive.
Look at Post #1. John McCain is still chewing on that bone.
Cruz will continue to, ever so beautifully, stick in the shiv!
Shouldn’t that be rocky and bullwinkle rollout???
Ted Cruz Ping!
If you want on/off this ping list, please let me know.
Please beware, this is a high-volume ping list!
Mr. Cruz isn't the only one talking about vindication, you snark-phony CNN pseudointellectual bozo.
I am elected to represent them. When we have to fly food from the food banks in Phoenix up to Tucson, a community outside the Grand Canyon, because people are out of food, then I have to say, Stop. Youre wrong. Youre crazy.
What a retard. If the policies weren’t so bad coming from both sides of the aisle then people wouldn’t have to depend on the government for all their food.
SAd to see that “my friend” Juan McCain has joined the wacko bird brigade.....
Yup. Just as the Colorado slut-ads have vindicated Rush.
We were right all along, how about that?
And now that “whacko bird” McCain is even calling for repeal !
I wonder how many of those people were really doctors... Or did they hand out lab coats to anyone
Like Karen Carpenter sings, “We’ve only just begun.”
Three quick points:
1.) Tyrant Obama cannot legally change the Obamacare Bill that he signed into Law.
Only the US Congress can legally change the Law, which then can be signed by Obama.
_________
2.) The MANDATORY dictate in Obamacare is the only factor that is essential to that Federal Law.
Take out the MANDATORY dictate in Obamacare, and only the Federally subsidized, or chronically unhealthy will buy it.
For example:
What would be the incentive for increased consumer demand for policy purchase of a NON-MANDATORY Obama Socialized Health Insurance Tax (OSHIT) instead of purchasing a policy from a private insurance company?

3.) Will the House RINOs think of either of the above two points? I seriously doubt it.
The vote on Senator’s Enzi’s amendment?
