These kids are completely unlike-able. I won’t hire them and I won’t work with them. Telling me I’m not allowed to feel that way doesn’t help.

“well . . . guess what . . . one kid does all or 99% of the work. Fat lot of good that did for the 99%”

I sort of had an inverse experience. In grad school nearly a 100 years ago we were each assigned to write a complete operating system (including drivers and user interface) for a Nova 1200. The main problem is there was only a single Nova for the whole class. I advocated the “project” approach where groups would work together, with the pieces of the OS split up among the group. The professor rejected that. Clever me found ANOTHER Nova in another department that wasn’t used much and, though that Nova had only paper tape for input AND storage, I had it completely to myself on nights, holidays, and weekends by weasling a key to the building. As deadline approached, no one but me had even come close to completion. THEN the prof wanted to have groups. Well, at that point, after putting in 100s of hours, my OS was about 99.9% complete, and I objected to being a member of any group because I was done. I was allowed to proceed alone because I think the prof didn’t believe me and wanted to see me flunk. As it turned out, I was the only one to finish the project. The prof never did figure out how I did it (after all, its not like I could have cheated) and probably still hates me to this day. Ironically, he was the best teacher I ever had and I always adored him, so I was made very unhappy that I had run afoul of his ego.
