Lee Ritenour: 'Wes Bound' Live (2008)

I dunno if any of you are into a little jazz- I am... that is, into a little of it.

I really don't know anything about the current scene either, but what I do know comes from a 1980 college roomate who was -atypically for an 18 y.o. of the time- heavily into jazz: I was already a pretty big Steely Dan/Bryan Ferry fan -with substantial jazz influences- but the things he introduced me to were David Sanborn(who I saw live), Jon Luc Ponty, Spyro Gyra (also saw live) and Lee Ritenour, an American some consider the best jazz guitarist -if not any- in the world.

Not only can the guy play, but he writes the lion's share of his material while bringing a clean, cool live sound that seems clearer than studio quality, if that's even possible... 'Wes Bound' was released on vinyl in '93, and here he is playing live in Rotterdam at the start of his 2008 European tour (you might recongnize the keyboard player as
Patrice Rushen, a pop star in the early 80s with 'Send Me Forget-Me-Nots', a charting R-n-B single that was nominated for a Grammy):

Love Lee Ritenour. Phil Upchurch is another great jazz guitarist.

As a lifelong musician I love an eclectic variety of styles including jazz. Especially guitar jazz like Lee Ritenour. I saw Jon Luc Ponty a couple times back in the 70s when he was touring in SoCal. I also was one of the few here who caught Steely Dan live on the Pretzel Logic tour in Long Beach Cal. Now that was one heck of a great show.

Thanks for posting this.

I had a Dave Grusin/Lee Ritenour album that I plyed the heck out of and then bought the CD. It’s a live one.

We have a very large musical crossover, Bullish

And you’ve been blessed, but it’s the Steely Dan show that’s really got me jealous... fantastic

That’s okay — most people, even jazz enthusiasts, have never heard of him. He’s a fabulous jazz guitarist. Been at it for a very very long time.

Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, and Robben Ford were the mainstays of L.A. studio guitar in the 70’s and early 80’s - all tremendous players and all still active (primarily their own material).

The very first time I ever heard “Rikki don’t lose that number” it was live in concert. Loved it and still do. They were amazing. Steely Dan is one band that can play their music live and sound exactly like the studio recording.... only louder and better. The year was either ‘73 or ‘74.

Good times!

They are truly stupendous, I am awed by The Dan!

I did this post two years back, has a couple GREAT videos of them live more recently, ‘Deacon Blues’ and ‘Black Cow’:

Lee Ritenour’s first paid session in the studio was with the Mamas and Papas when he was just 16!

For a while, the critics said he was too smooth, not technical enough. Here is his answer:
