I actually think this is who and what he is, he's just been hiding it for too long, and his veneer has worn through.

He's always slipped on occasion and shown his face, particularly when he's actually, been....you know....challenged. Now, as his fraud and pretense to being a competent manager who knows how to accomplish things crumbles, he can't stop himself from being the thin skinned fool he is.
