This used to frustrate me to no end. "Don't they realize," I would ask, "that they would be among the first to fall under the government thumb and be told what to say and write in the event a full-blown dictatorship was imposed?"
Then, I came to realize they are part and parcel to the ruling class. Even most of those at the local affiliates who sometimes show a small degree of independence and practice random acts of real journalism, aspire for promotion to the inner circle.
A handful of them either realize they will never make it there and/or have a conscience attack and turn Bernie Goldberg on us. But the vast majority just go along to get along and look for opportunities which might make them the next Katie Couric.
