I agree with Packrat and PBS.

Several self-important people have tried to flame me off FR because I had the temerity to question their precious-metal fetish. The simple fact is, gold bullion doesn't make good soup.

Locally here, the prepper community had the discussion of what would be the item/substance/element best suited for post-event, and the consensus was:

Primers.

One enterprising soul, a fanatical reloader, is trying to assemble the tools and talent needed to manufacture primers. I don't have the expertise or the finances, so I wish him success.

On a personal choice, I'm re-re-reading Selco's blog entries for inspiration; one tidbit mentions recharging lighters as a lucrative barter economy asset. Hmmm...
