It has little to do with the need for sex.

I disagree. I believe that for some men, rape is what occurs when normal urges are not controlled by societal inhibitions. In those cases the urge is sexual. In other crimes, other urges are not inhibited. Anger is not controlled in assaults, envy or greed are not controlled in theft, etc.

A step down the road in the breakdown of the societal inhibitions concerning sexual ethics is the concept of consent. At that point the word 'rape' will lose its meaning, the way 'marriage' has.

I think we're already partway down that road.

The idea of casual sex has already degraded, IMO, the idea that rape is a particularly horrific crime. It makes sex no big deal, even sex with strangers.

And if it's no big deal, why should forcing someone to engage in it be considered any more awful than forcing them to engage in some other activity that is no big deal, like drinking a cup of coffee with them. The element of force is the same in either case, the only real difference is the sexual aspect of rape.

I hasten to add that I don't believe this. I happen to believe that sex is a big deal and should never be engaged in casually, in fact not outside of marriage. I believe rape is one of the worst crimes and sins possible, but I think it's difficult for the "sex is no big deal" types to explain logically why they agree with me on that point.
