SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Close your eyes for a moment and imagine it's the summer of 2016. Fresh off her victory in the primaries, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is searching for a running mate.
If the 68-year-old Clinton of three years from now were to play the role of Dr. Frankenstein in crafting the politically ideal VP pick, relative youth likely would be a key trait in order to balance the ticket.
And, perhaps facing a general election campaign against the first Hispanic presidential or vice-presidential nominee (think Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, or Susana Martinez), she might also look to a Latino to shore up a critical piece of the Democratic coalition in tossup states like Florida, Colorado, Nevada and Arizona.
Whats more, the former secretary of state probably would want to accentuate the historic nature of her bid to become the first female president by not pairing herself with someone whose ego runs counter to playing second fiddle (sorry, Cory Booker, youre out.).
Its a hypothetical scenario, but not one that requires a stretch to think Clintons gaze might land here, upon the nations seventh largest city, where Mayor Julian Castro would be a few months shy of his 42nd birthday and have seven years in office under his belt.
By most accounts, Castro would be eager to answer the call to national office just four years after introducing himself to the country by keynoting the 2012 Democratic National Convention. But in an exclusive interview this week with RealClearPolitics, the compelling Latino mayor, who has for years been pegged as a rising star, said he did not feel the weight of heavy expectations.

I’ve believed for awhile that a Hispanic was going to get a close look for a future coronation. I would not be surprised at all if Hillary taps him to be VP. Selection of Castro to the White House would be little more than a formality once Hillary wraps up her reign of terror... er... second term in 2024.
The Rats already have the first half-black gay Muslim, so they don’t need Cory Booker, who is hinting that he’s gay, and is fully black, unless they really believe that Obama isn’t black enough.
Hillary will fill the first Lesbian check box.
A first Hispanic is a must for the next election.
But they haven’t gone for the first Native American yet, and Elizabeth Warren gives them that, and she’s also a more of a woman than Hillary. That fills two check boxes.
One minority they will never go for again is a Jew. Secretly, many Rats probably blame Joe Lieberman for Gore’s loss.
But sooner or later, the Rats will run out of “first minorities” to tap for top offices, so they will go back to running white men, as they always have.
But by then, there won’t be a country to run any more.
The Castro brothers have been reared as Marxists by their militant Communist mother, so they should have a bright future in the Democrat party. This is how America is “transformed” by the likes of Obama and the Castros.
Castro is definitely one that conservatives need to keep an eye on. He’s a smart, eloquent speaker and will be a force in the future of the Dim party.
If Hillary is going to make a bid for Texas’ electoral votes, she should select a more experienced politician—Sheila Jackson-Lee.
